3rd Trimester

If you had a short labor the first time, how did your second labor/delivery go?

I was in labor with my DD for less than 4 hours from the time I felt a little "off" and suspected it might be labor to the time she was delivered (2 days before her due date).  I know every pregnancy is different, and there are no guarantees that the second labor will be shorter than the first, but I was wondering if anyone who had a very short first labor could tell me how it went with their second pregnancy.

To add to my short previous labor, at 35+ weeks I am feeling what I think are pre-labor contractions (very sporadic and infrequent radiating back pain that feels similar to my contractions last time around).  I was planning on staying home from work as the due date gets closer (I have a 40 min commute w/ no traffic), and now I'm wondering if I should be pushing up my last day of work. I want to make sure I make it to the hospital!

I also had my DD in 2011 in 4 hours.

DS was a whole other story. I went to almost 42 weeks & almost had to be induced. After a membrane sweep he came by himself after 14 hours of painful labor later.

The whole "subsequent babies come quicker thing" is horseshit IMHO. Just like everything in this life: everything is individual.

  • My DS was quick, 4 hours total in 2007.  Midwife told me and DH to prepare for a fast baby this time too. First one was a cake walk, second baby has been pregnancy from hell, so I'm expecting a long labor and delivery too.
  • @PrimRoseMama yes definetly have crushed my second baby labor dream my first labor wasn't bad I was induced so I was already drugged up when the contractions got bad at 11 almost 12 in the afternoon they told me I was ready to push by 1:19 he was out best delivery ever worst recovery had an episiotomy my son was 10.8 pounds and I lost a lot of blood since they had to take me to surgery ti sew me up since I had a double linning. I don't mind a long labor this time around believe it or not I just don't want a bad recovery again and of course as long as baby is healthy it doesn't matter
  • first 5 hrs... 2nd been having contractons for days... I'm ready
  • My 1st 6 hours...my 2nd 4 hours
  • My sister had her first child in 18 hours, her second around 8 hours and her third she had to be induced a week later and he took 22 hours !
  • My second was quicker than my first and they both were really fast.. I am anticipating a quick one for this pregnancy too!
  • As a doula, I can tell you that the majority of second labors are much much faster than previous labors. An OB will generally tell you about half the time of your first labor, assuming both occur spontaneously. I would say half the time and maybe slightly faster than that.

Both my previous labors were spontaneous and not augmented in any way. My first took 24 hours. My second took 6.
  • My first was 11hrs and second 3hrs. However, the speed of the second made it more intense. Just hoping this one cooks the entire 40wks since my previous two were at 38 and 36 wks.
