Biking

First off, I haven't really done an introduction. I'm a FTM and new to the bump. I'm 7 weeks today and I've been browsing the boards for a few weeks just to get the feel of it!

Anyway, before I got pregnant SO and I would bike several times a week, mainly just on family trails. As far as everything I've read up on, it's pretty safe to continue to bike, plus good exercise, as long as I'm not doing anything I wouldn't do prior to becoming pregnant.

Any other ladies out there who mountain biked/cycled even casually and are still planning on doing it?

Re: Biking

  • Many women continue sports like mountain biking while pregnant. I would talk to your doctor as they will want you to stop at some point (probably in second tri).

  • I wouldn't mountain bike, and I'm pretty comfortable with it when not pregnant. Too much chance of falling. Regular easy biking, though, even on trails, doesn't personally worry me in the first and second tri. Be mindful of your balance because as your belly grows, it'll get harder to balance as easily. I think I stopped biking last time around 28 weeks, maybe?

  • My husband and I just got bikes in April so we were biking almost every weekend! I asked my doctor about this and she said it was fine in the first trimester, but didn't recommend it in the second and third. Last week we biked 8 miles, which is typically easy for me, and I was soooo out of breath. I listened to my body and took a short break and slowed it down a bit. I was fine after that! And plan to continue biking occasionally in my first trimester, but just at a slower pace than normal.
  • Definitely not doing anything rough, mainly just flat trails! :) But I got my first mountain bike back in April as well! (Had been using SO's dad's bike) so in a way I wish I would have known so I could have saved the money. But I agree with just listening to my body, it was so muggy yesterday so I just took my time. And as far as biking in the third tri there's no way! I'm a wimp, even in the Georgia winter!

  • I'm a mountain biker! I'm 7 weeks and still mountain biking. I've been mountain biking for 7-8 years, and now I am just riding a lot more cautiously and slowly. I'm sticking to the "easy" trails I jour l know very well.
  • I should also mention that I used to race mountain bikes and my doctor told me it was fine. I'll definitely stop when my body tells me to.
  • Definitely agree! I feel like in the 3rd tri I won't even want to anymore.

  • Just bought a new hybrid bike over the weekend. My SO and I probably bike 3-5 times a week. Nothing too crazy, but I'm planning on continuing as long as I can. There's always risks, you can worry about EVERYTHING if you let yourself. Oh, and I'm 8.5 weeks.
