overweight pregnancy - compliment or insult?

I was about 60 pounds overweight before getting pregnant. I've always been very self-conscious about my belly. Now that I'm pregnant and we've announced it, most people say "oh wow, you're already showing so much! " or they say "I'm guessing you're having a girl because of how full your belly looks" I just smile and nod when really I want to say, I'm only 15 weeks along so most of my "bump" is just belly fat. Anyone else not sure how yo handle comments like these?

Re: overweight pregnancy - compliment or insult?

  • I've had people ask if I was having twins. I just blow them off. Even my grandpa said I was getting fat. I was overweight too and self conscious about my look but the way I see it now is I have a baby in my belly and no matter what people say I'm happy she's there

  • I've had people say they can "really see it in my face". I haven't put on a pound yet, so either they are referring to the insane amount of acne I now have or they are seeing something I don't. I'm only 16 weeks, so no major increase in blood volume yet.
  • I'm exactly the same and find it really rude. On a couple of occasions I've been really straight up and said "I haven't actually put any weight on at all so you've essentially just called me fat." That was only in the really early days when I was only about 8 weeks and people said it, now at 16 weeks I just don't say anything even though I still haven't gained a pound.
  • I think that if you have a choice between being upset about something or not, I would choose not. You know the comments are innocent enough and not meant to insult, so you would be doing nothing but causing yourself undue stress by deciding to be offended about it. Just smile and nod :)
