Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Feeding- When does every two hours become every three and then every four?

We are feeding baby at two weeks old every two hours during the day or less depending on her hunger. When did any of you experience it spacing out more to three hours, the four hours and when did your baby sleep through the night? Just trying to get a general idea of how many months it will be till she goes longer. I know every baby is different but just trying to get a general idea.

  • My LO is 7 weeks old and he wants to eat every 3h from week 5-6 I guess. But I've got low supply of milk so maybe it's not enough for him so he wants more often than should (?). The first "night sleep" is often the longest one from 8pm till 1am, but then he wants to eat every 2h:))) and he doesn't sleep a lot at day time now, but mostly because of colica:( if baby has a growth spurt he will eat very often (even every 40 min is ok), so never know;)

That sounds reasonable to me. First night sleep of 8pm to 1am seems pretty impressive to me. We have just been feeding every two hours during the day and most of the night and every once in awhile at night she will go 3 to 3 and a half hours.
  • My baby is almost 3 weeks old (3 weeks on Sunday) and finally started to spread out to every 3 hours two days ago...
  • Mine is 10 weeks, but he has been at every 3 hours since he was just a few days old. Occasionally he will only go 2 & 1/2 but usually 3 hours. The day he was born he slept 6 hours through the night, then went down to two 4 hour stretches. Then a 5 hr stretch and 4 hr stretch. He started sleeping through the night at 5 weeks. 10pm-6:30-7:30ish.
  • My LO started changing his eating habits around 4 weeks where he could space his feedings out a little more and take an extra ounce or so in at each feeding.  He is now 7 weeks and if he is awake in between feedings we go every 3 hours, however lately he sleeps for 3-4 hours at a time, and sometimes more (lately about 6-7 hours at night).

Posted from one of the other boards, and a really good read - talks about the 'myth' of low supply, more that it's 'different' supply.  I can get 4 to 6 hours at 5 weeks (sometimes) with lo not needing a feed.  Only if she's deeply asleep though.

    Great article
  • My 9 week old still sometimes cluster feeds during the day (every 1-2 hours.) he has slept through the night a few times so far, but usually wakes up every 4-5hrs to feed.
