(Someone correct me if I am wrong here)

The yolk sac is what nourishes the baby until the placenta takes over. It's eventually absorbed by the fetus.

The fetal pole is the actual fetus. It first shows up as a thickening of the wall of the yolk sac.

Hope this helps! (And I hope it's right)

  • Can the yolk be visible before the pole or visa versa?

I *think* the yolk is always visible before the pole as the pole starts out as a thickening of the yolk sac wall. But I could be wrong.

If you don't mind my asking, what happened at your ultrasound?

  • Saw a sac and something else but tech wasn't happy with what she saw and in hind sight I don't know if she said she didn't see the yolk or not and I should have asked more. I have a follow up U:s this week and hear stories where at 6 weeks there's no sign of baby but a week or two later there is. I have hope but fear the worst.

A tech is never supposed to reveal anything, so that was pretty shitty of her. Every pregnancy is a little different, so it's entirely possible that you'll get great news.

I've also got a follow U/S this week (and I'm nervous as f*ck) - the wait sucks. Fx for good news for you.

FX for both you guys. Mine is tomorrow and I feel like an elephant is sitting on my chest. I don't see how baby can be fine with so much bleeding and no SCH.

I had a similar first ultrasound at 6 weeks -- sac and yolk but didn't see a baby & apparently there's already supposed to be a heartbeat at 6 weeks?! Trying to stay positive though. I will say a prayer for you ladies whenever I pray for myself. <3
  • I had an ultrasound at 6 weeks and only saw the yolk sac with no fetal pole. The doctor estimated that I was a little over a week behind. I had a follow-up ultrasound two weeks later (so at my 8 week mark) and was expecting the baby to measure (if we saw one) in the late 6 week mark. Well, we did in fact see the baby and it measured on time at 8 weeks and had a visible heartbeat of 144. I know it is hard not to worry (I was very concerned during those two weeks). The doctor informed me that in the early stages a LOT changes just day to day. I hope my experience helps you ladies, although I know my experience doesn't have any effect on your own. I will be thinking of you and hope you all have good news at your follow-up appointments.
