Top of the belly swelling?

FTM here so new to everything pregnancy related. I know bloat can make you look pregnant early on but I always thought it was in the lower belly. The top of my belly near my chest is swelling up. It's strange bc I don't feel bloated or anything. Has this happened to anyone before?

That is happening to me, now I need to start off by saying I have no idea why, (lol) but, I'm thinking maybe it's because as your uterus is growing and slowly pushing up, the other organs are also getting pushed up, especially if you are short like me and have a smaller torso. Or maybe it's just bloat?! Haha. Sorry, hope that was helpful.

  • That's where my bloat is and has been for over a month. A lot of that is stomach and the large intestine is wrapped and right below the stomach hence the bloat.
  • What's FTM? Sorry I'm off topic.

  • Same thing going on over here. 8w tomorrow with #4 and I look very pregnant at nighttime. I'm 5ft2in.
  • I'm glad I'm not the only one! I was starting to think something was wrong but I have no pain or anything it just keeps growing. My husband is so silly and said that its bc my baby is pushing everything upwards but I had to explain to him that it's too early to have everything pushed up bc the baby is still so tiny. Well at least I didn't think that was possibly this early at 11weeks 2 days.

I had so much bloat in my entire abdomen last night I thought I was going to die. I kept trying to stretch out to kind of make more space in my torso.
  • 10w4d and the exact same ha I'm 5'3" and look soooo pregnant already... Must be normal then
  • Yip! Went to take a picture the other day and gave up because of that reason haha
  • Me too! What makes it worse is I lost 75lbs 10 years ago. I'm not skinny but I'm active and relatively fit before pregnancy ( I've been so exhausted this trimester the most I do is walk our dog). Anyway, I've always had a little loose skin pouch above my belly button from the weight gain, and I'm noticing that's becoming much more pronounced the past few weeks. Especially in the evening. I'm 9w3d.

Last week I stepped on the scale and I had gained 10lbs since week 4 when I first found out. I'm hoping it's a lot of bloat and it will start evening out now hat I'm beginning to get some energy back and am going to try getting back to the gym. I also figure it has to do with the increase in carbs. I'm not a big carb eater normally but I definitely have been eating a lot more since pregnant.

@nickicb7 Your post made me feel so much better! I lost 100 lbs this past year, and this change to my eating habits and exercise has been really hard for me. I weighed myself today and I'm up 8 lbs (I'm 9w5d). I'm so pissed at myself for letting my eating get out of control, but I feel like I literally have no control over it! I'm really hoping this is mostly bloat, but I'm not sure. Hopefully now that my nausea is subsiding my desire for only carbs and no exercise will go away.
  • I have the same thing! It's worse when I'm bloated but it's still visible when I'm not. I'm very short too, so I attribute it to not having much space for the growing uterus and my organs are getting smooshed upwards.

  • @makeshifwings and @mickicb7 I'm in the same boat as you ladies. I lost and kept off 130lbs for 8 years. This is my first pregnancy and I am feeling bloated and that extra skin that used to "flap around" my stomach area is not flapping so much and is protruding more! Definitely feeling that the top of belly is swelling...and is making me only want to wear skirts/dresses at this point because pants are just not happening. Too tight on the belly and I'm 11 weeks, 2 days!
  • bloaaaaaaat. I look VERY pregnant but it's all bloat. hahahaha. Oh, the wonders we endure.
  • I am with all of you ladies! I am 5"3 and am healthy. Of course I eat a little extra but there is a mini-bump in the morning and by the evening I am with @jennaonthego, I look super pregnant! I am 12w2d and am a FTM (second pregnancy) but thought this was a little wild!
  • I had this a few weeks ago but I feel like the bloat and upper stomach bloat is going away now that I'm further along.  Usually by the evenings it is worse but not as bad as it was.

  • I know it's all bloat, but I feel like my uterus is possibly pushing any extra chub I had (which didn't use to be much, mind you, but now it's explosive) up and into my upper stomach? Uterus is 6 times what it used to be, so that's gotta count for something?
  • It's so weird bc I wore a maxi dress the other day and looked down and al I saw was belly! I just can't wait till I start rounding out everywhere and it actually look like a baby bump
  • My friend told me that because my uterus is getting bigger it is pushing my stomach upwards already, so that may account for the upper belly being more noticeable, especially after eating all day.

@mommachanner and @makeshifwings it's definitely nice to have others who understand the whole pregnancy after weight loss mental stress.

  • I am right there with you! I lost 60 lbs 5 years ago. I am usually really good about watching what I eat and working out. Since I found out I was pregnant I have already put on 8 lbs. I am 9w6d. The thing that is bothering me is that I really haven't been eating horribly. In fact, the no wine thing should make it easier to stay at a good weight without having to workout harder. When I talked to my doctor about this, she didn't seem concerned. Told me that blood volume is increasing and there is water retention. I have noticed my hands and feet are swelling some, so I am hoping it is mostly water and will even out as I progress!

Congrats on losing and keeping off the weight for so long! I just keep telling myself that we are creating a life right now and to try not to be too concerned with the weight (easier said than done!). If we lost the weight once, with hard work after the pregnancy, we can do it again! Good luck :-)
