October 2015 Moms

Ended up in hospital again.

So, all day yesterday I'd been feeling off. Dizzy, lightheaded, neaseated, sweaty palms.. Tried calling my OB earlier on in the day but her nurse wasnt picking up the phone and the front desk couldnt find her anywhere. Which is typical as I've not seen this nurse do her darn job a single time. So I kind of sucked it up. Then a few hours later I started feeling real bad and asked my husband to come from work so I'd feel a bit safer with the lightheadedness. Didnt want to faint and be alone during it if I could prevent it. We ended up calling front desk again and they were able to put me through to one of the nurses for another OB in the clinic. She told me to watch for heart palpitations and the likes and to go into the ER if I ended up feeling any. My body seemed to calm down an hour or so after that call, so I thought I'd be in the clear. Nope! An hour after dinner everything was back with a vengeance, now including palpitations and shortness of breath. I dont like just going to the ER without making sure its warranted, so we called again. After hours this time, so we were put through to OB triage at the hospital. They told us to come into the ER as it didnt sound directly pregnancy related, and to tell them to send me upstairs if they thought otherwise. So off we went, to that darn ER again.

They did an EKG on me and had me hooked up to a monitor to see if anything was wrong with my heart, other than it feeling like it was about to jump out of my chest. Everything seemed ok there, so that wasnt helping much. They made sure to check on baby as well, who was very busy making sure people saw she was there.. kicks everywhere, she didnt want that doppler on her at all. Her hb was 148 so no worries there either. They monitored me for a few hours while making sure I was properly hydrated, and ended up telling me they had no idea what was causing this other than it probably being part of my pregnancy. A blood cloth was mentioned, but it'd include a scan to be sure it wasnt that and they werent comfortable doing that on a pregnant woman. The doctor spent a good amount of time explaining why he didnt think that was my issue and why a simple blood test would be pretty much pointless, also due to the pregnancy, and left the decision with me. Decided to not go with the scan because I tend to trust a doctors judgement if he's so carefully considering options in front of me.

I was then sent upstairs because of cramping I was suddenly getting in my uterus. Went into an OB triage room in the birthing center and they monitored babies heartbeat, my bloodpressure and heartbeat, and contractions for a while to make sure everything wasnt horrible. I did end up having some contractions but they went away on their own. The nurse there wasn't worried it'd happen, but told me to come running right back if I started having them again. Discharged and sent home.

I still dont know what was going on the entire day yesterday, and I do feel better right now, but gosh do those things scare me more than they used to! My thought process normally is something along the line of "well it appeared on its own, it'll go away on its own sooner or later" because I hate having to go in to a hospital.. but with this little one inside of me I dont want to take any risks. My husband is staying home with me today, according to him to make sure im ok. Meanwhile, he's hogging the bed being crazy comfortable now that hes chased me out by flailing. Thanks dear, but I think Id be more ok if I were able to get some rest.. Silly man.

Do want to give huge props to the nurses in the ER yesterday. Amazingly kind and caring. I've not had a single bad experience in that hospital and it just makes me tear up to think these men and women are up in the middle of the night to make sure people are safe. Not a single frowny face at working the night shift, all smiles and good moods, rather incredible!

  • Glad you are ok! Thankfully the ER nurses were so wonderful! What would we do without their knowledge and caring personalities.
  • I'm glad you're alright and the nurses were kind!
  • Scary! Glad you and baby are ok!
  • Glad you and baby are okay. I know I struggle with is this normal or do I go to the hospital? But I'm glad you went and got checked out!
  • O momma I hope your feeling better and that the little one is OK too!

  • Oh no ! Happy to hear all is well and that the hospital staff was so kind . That's always helpful. Hope all continues to be ok and you can relax.
  • How scary! Have you been sleeping on your back or right side at all? I am no doctor (I know, surprising!) but I had very similar symptoms as you one day and it was from sleeping on my back, therefore pressing on the major vein with baby's weight. I felt awful and debated going to the ER myself. As soon as I started sleeping only on my left side, symptoms went away completely. Pregnancy is a huge change for our bodies so it could be a million different things as I'm sure you know :) but I just thought I would throw that out there just in case!
  • Glad everything is ok!
  • Glad you're okay, hopefully your pregnancy isn't so eventful from here on out.
  • Goodness! That sounds so stressful, not having a definitive reason for your symptoms!  I'm glad the medical staff was so helpful (aside from your OBs negligent nurse, haha). I hope you have a relaxing, stress-free day with your hubby (even if he's hogging the bed)!

  • Very glad you and baby are okay, and night nurses are the best! I may be biased since my husband is one...but still :)
  • Oh Mel, what a scary episode! I hope you don't have to go back to the ER for it ever again. I'm so glad you and your baby girl are ok!
  • I'm glad you were taken care of. Hopefully everything settles down. It's funny how we can feel so awful and the baby is totally oblivious. Glad she's well!
  • I am sorry to hear about the stress that experience brought on! There is nothing worse than that feeling, but it sounds like you made all of the right decisions for you and baby. I was in OB triage twice near the end with DD with similar issues, but mine was related to over-exerting myself during the heat. My body and my little baby said, "STOP IT, mama!" I hope your DH is taking good care of you and you're feeling better. Take it easy!

  • Glad you're ok and the nurses were very pleasant! Do you have any history of anxiety or panic attacks? I've had similar symptoms a couple times and grayed out (stayed concious but couldn't see, and my ears rang). I also had the nausea and tightness in my chest. They found nothing medically wrong with me the time I went to the ER for it.
  • Glad to hear you're feeling better. That must've been scary, you sure handled it better than I would've. Here's to an unevenly full next three to four months!

Thanks everyone, it was rather scary indeed. Taking it easy today and so far so good. DH is trying his best to make sure im comfortable, you know, now that he's awake. That man does not know the world exists for about an hour after he wakes up lol. He's off to the store to get me a nice lunch right now, after letting me nap while he looked after the pup. He also let his mom know since he'll be leaving for 5 days next week and he's now nervous about it. She has no issues driving up here if I'd need it, so that's sweet of her, considering she lives in a different state. She even offered I could stay there while he's gone, but gosh I like being in my own place and I just want to see how it goes. Fingers crossed it was a one off thing! :)

@rhiannonbaca I'm a side-sleeper, and even laying on my back has been uncomfortable for a few weeks now, so I dont think I've been sleeping on my back. Who knows what weird positions I get myself into during sleep though! I do use a snoogle to try and keep myself in a good position, those things help with comfort so much I dont ever want to go without anymore. I'm glad you threw that suggestion out though, always good to have people thinking with you! ^^

@Sballerina I do have pretty bad anxiety, but it doesnt usually end with symptoms like these. I tend to hyperventilate and cry uncontrolably, which wasnt an issue at all yesterday. Then again lots of things change when we're pregnant so who knows!

  • I've felt like this the past two days. Heaviness in chest, light headed, weak feeling, loss of appetite... I blamed the humidity here in Texas lol Now you've given me something to think about... Glad you are feeling better and keeping you in my prayers!
  • Aw, I'm sorry Mel.  :(  I hope that your pregnancy starts getting a little easier!

Ah ok, @MelMel92. Don't want to scare you, but it made me think of my experience and so wondered if that might possibly be related. Physical symptoms of anxiety suck! It's better when I can throw my worries onto God's much more capable shoulders, but sometimes I have such a lag time before I do that!

I hope things smooth out for you and you can enjoy the rest of this pregnancy :)
  • Glad you and baby are okay. This happened to me earlier but not as bad as you. My heart rate went through the roof but my blood pressure stayed normal. I was slightly dizzy but nothing that I felt was too much for me to handle. I put it as my blood sugar getting too low (last time I ate was about 6:30 last night and this happened about 9:30am) I ate and drank a glass of milk and felt better. I see my OB on Wednesday and plan to talk to him on Monday before I see him(I'm currently on vacation). Praying that my sugar levels were my only issue. Little princess seems to be doing fine other then that! Make sure to eat enough and hopefully they can find out what's wrong if it happens again!
