Birth Video -FTM

Hi All,
FTM here & just wondering as I think about literally everything to come in this journey. Has anyone watched a birth video? I'm in the medical field and don't get too squeamish, but I don't want to have to "try to unseen it" if it's kind of scary. Are most moms not curious & just go with the flow? Just wondering, I know they showed a birth video in most lamaze or parenting classes, but I'm thinking ones who have seen, tell others: proceed with caution, don't scare yourself?

Just my question of the day! Don't judge! ;-) We've been waiting for our family for a long time now, and I know it's going to be beautiful & special no matter what, just wondering others' experiences. Also, plan to have hubby or SO stay up north? My hubby is haha, I don't think he could handle looking at all. Thanks!!

Re: Birth Video -FTM

  • Hmm, that's a tough one. I never watched a video, but was there when my sister had her baby and watched the whole time and it was truly incredible. I think in the moment you are so excited that it doesn't even register what's happening (at least in my experience when it's someone you know). With DS I told MH he could stay by my head if he wanted, but he did end up watching for the most part and wasn't weirded out by anything. He started bawling tears of joy the second DS came out, which was adorable because he NEVER cries. So while I think a video could be a bit traumatic for some, it really doesn't compare to experiencing it IRL.

  • How nice. Yes I was actually thinking of that too. Just going with the flow..and you never know whether one of us or both want to experience watching because it'll be us, not a stranger. Very nice point made. Thanks :)
  • I did not watch a birth video because I was in the room when my nieces were born so I saw it first hand. Also I took birth classes and they never showed a video. I think if you think you can handle it watch, but you already know what's gonna happen. So if you don't watch it's not like your going to be in the dark come your babies birth.

  • I have watched some births on youtube out of sheer curiosity (I obviously know how the process goes, but have never seen it in person) and I am not scarred for life or anything :) I don't know that it really taught me anything, but it was interesting to see a few different birthing experiences and how it all played out. Especially if you are un-squeamish as you say you are, I would go ahead and watch!
  • I have watched sooooooo many birth videos trying to prepare myself for birth. So far different videos make me sure I want an epidural, where others I'm like, oh natural doesn't seem so bad lol.
  • I watched one with my SO we are both going to be FTMs I think it was good to watch it was a little gross but it's going to happen! I don't get squeamish she does and she handled it fine we won't be watching any more most likely but watching one was fine!
  • It's so interesting, how every person or parent is completely different! :-) very cool.... we shall see what we ourselves will end up doing. Boy, this 6-7 more months is giving me waaaay too much time to think hehe ;-)
  • Personally, I don't want to see lol. I'll leave it to my imagination. ;)
  • I watched a lot of different kinds of birthing, epidural, natural, c-section, out of curiosity. I'm a firm advocate of being informed, so I think if you can watch with an educational type mindset, maybe taking notes on things that concern you, or things you liked, this is a good reason to watch. I might steer clear of emergency birthing situations because you only want to be thinking positively sub-consciously and consciously on what you will make of your baby's birth story. Hubby said he wanted to stay north, but when my doula said, "look! The babies head!" He couldn't resist and took a glance, haha. He doesn't seem traumatized.
  • I'm a L&D nurse, so seeing birth first hand is my job :-) I will say that no video will compare to seeing and experiencing birth in person. It truly is the most amazing thing. Most husbands come in with the same mind set of staying up at the head of the bed. However, us nurses usually make them get involved and help hold a leg, etc. Its amazing how you and your husband will forget it's even a medical process going on and unfortunately a video can't really prepare you for the emotions that go along with birth, both for mom and daddy to be.
  • I'm trying to avoid it. If I watch it and I freak out, then I'll be shitting myself because I can't undo it haha
