How long?

How long do you hold your baby after she falls asleep?
My DD falls asleep pretty quickly and I usually hold her for 10-15 minutes after she's asleep to get through those initial startles, but that gets tiring, especially at night, and it doesn't always work. Holding her longer also doesn't seem to help. Any tips? Is it just that infant reflex?

The startling is an infant reflex. They do it throughout the night. Try swaddling it keeps them from waking themselves up. I do this with my LO then give him his last feeding. He falls asleep shortly after that and stays asleep for 6 to 8 hours.

  • I would suggest putting her down while she is drowsy. I read somewhere that it is good sleeping habits especially for the future. They learn to settle themselves and go to sleep on their own. My LO does that pretty well with the exception of when she got her shots and when she is just not ready to go to sleep. However, my results to this procedure may vary from yours because I co-sleep which works better for me, so she sees me as she is drifting off but no holding though. Hope you find a solution that works for you and baby.

  • I noticed a big difference in how my baby cries when he wakes up. I used to hold him 5-10 min then carefully put him in his crib, when he would awake he would immediately cry. When you put them down as they are heavily closing their eyes/drowsy they are not confused when they wake up or exclaim "where am I?!" He doesn't wail like he used to, just makes some grunts until I go to him.
  • I hold her for about 20 minutes, sometimes longer if I'm watching tv and am enjoying myself. I agree with you though, sometimes it doesn't work no matter how long you hold them.
