Toddler Bed Conversion Kit?

My mom bought us the crib and I didn't want to ask her to buy us the toddler conversion kit as I wasn't really sure I needed it. What has everyones experience been? We are hoping to have another kid around 2 years apart and I wasn't sure around what age you usually convert the bed? I know if we don't buy it now there is a chance the crib will be discontinued and the option will be gone. Should I just wait until this kid is 6 months old to make a decision? We got a Pottery Barn crib.

Re: Toddler Bed Conversion Kit?

  • I would just buy it now to be safe. Prob will convert around 2 but if you use again maybe later. But you still would want to at some point especially if spending pottery barn price. My sister in law got everything at once too and said totally worth it. You could register for?

  • We converted around 2, but then went to a full size bed at 2.5. So I guess it would be easy enough to skip it and go to a regular bed. But like you said, if you don't get it now, you might miss your chance.

We have a convertible crib but are not buying the kit.
We discovered you can attach the cheaper mesh ones that do the same job and plan to do that in place of a matching kit.
Also, may have another baby soon after and, in that event, my husband would build a toddler bed in place of converting the crib. Both options would be cheaper for us.

We aren't registering at Pottery Barn for the simple reason it doesn't really have anything we need, more just pretty stuff! But if we buy the kit we would just pay for it ourselves. I just wasn't sure if it was worth it.
  • Either option could work. We bought our crib for dd1 with every intention of converting it for her and then getting another crib for our second baby. After becoming pregnant we realized that my parents had my own single bed that they weren't using and said we could have for dd1 (I mean it was technically still mine anyway) so we painted it to freshen it up a bit and bought one of those bed rails from Walmart so she doesn't fall out (she's going to be 2 in September). Now when dd2 is ready for transition she will use the crib converted to a toddler bed and so on.
  • If your planning on another baby using the crib again in 2 years, I think the conversion kit would be a waste. You can either buy them a toddler bed, or put them in a twin/full bed.

If you are planning on buying a completely new set of furniture for the next baby, than the conversion kit would come in handy.

  • We just put our daughter in a toddler bed, and we'll just use the crib for this one.
  • We are getting the conversion now because we found a crib we really liked previously but the conversion for it was discontinued. Don't want to risk that again and it won't hurt to have around just in case. And the set for our crib is pretty inexpensive. We're going to add it to the registry. ;)
  • I would buy it. It's awesome to have when your child is ready for that. We used one for our daughter and she stayed in that bed for another year because of it:)
  • My daughters crib came with one, but we are not going to use it for her.  She is going to go straight into a big girl bed (she is 2).  I may end up using it for my second.

  • So it seems to be optional. We plan on reusing the nursery for the next baby so I thought it may be a waste. I think I'll wait and re analyze around 6-9 months. If we want it then I'll buy it
  • You probably won't end up using it for your first but could use it for your second (or last child).
Do they have the one that converts it to a twin/full or just the toddler? Maybe skip the toddler one and just do the twin/full that you would definitely use.

It looks like only a toddler bed (the different side rail is all I see)
  • @Krysta6 bummer. I'd still probably get it. Pb cribs are so beautiful is want to use it for as long as possible.
  • If there is any possibility that you might ever want it BUY IT NOW!! We hesitated and they stopped making ours. Sort of forced our decision!

I was recently wondering the same question, as the conversion kit for the crib we are going to get is on back order for awhile. I saw that to convert to a full sized bed later on some people just order a standard metal frame. Has anyone tried that?
