Baby- Low blood sugar

Has anyone's baby experienced low blood sugar levels? If so, what happened? My son was born yesterday and they just admitted him to the NICU today due to low blood sugar. He was 8lbs 7oz at birth and the doctor said it could have to do with him just being a large baby. The plan is to start an IV of glucose solution until he stabilizes. I am concerned this could majorly impact breast feeding as well because he doesn't have to work nearly as hard if we have to supplement with formula. I am pumping. Just wondering if anyone has experienced something similar.

    Yes, my daughter was born last week and she was 9 lbs 8 oz, so they also said its because of her high birth weight. I also breastfeed, so they told me breast milk can stabilize blood sugar but it can't bring it up. She was 32 when she was first born, and 31 after a few feelings. Thankfully they only had to suppIlement one formula feeling and it came up to 64, I think they said over 55 is what they look for. After that, they continued to prick her heel for 2 more days and it never dropped back down. I hope your baby's sugar stabilizes quickly.

    My son was born last week at 10 lbs 3 oz and also had low blood sugar. He was admitted to the special care nursery and kept there over night. Since I wanted to breastfeed they brought him to my room every 2 hours to feed him and then topped him up with formula to get his blood sugar up. By the next morning his blood sugar was stable and they stopped topping him up. The day and a half after that was a bit difficult because my milk hadn't come in yet and he got used to getting 25 -40ml of formula per feeding and wasn't getting anywhere near that much just breastfeeding so was constantly feeding. Once the milk came in it was fine and now he is two weeks old and breasfeeding like a champ!

    Interesting. My twins were born at 36 weeks at 4lb 15 oz and 5lb 6oz and they had low blood sugar too. Stabilized with feeding and no NICU thankfully. Must be common in big and little babies!

    My Lo was 5 lbs 9oz at birth and couldn't maintain his sugars and was in the nicu for 4 days. He had an uv with dextrose and had to be supplemented with formula. I attempted to recast feed before formula but we didn't have a good latch established at that point. I pumped and was able to give colostrum for him to drink. Lo wasn't eating well and had to have a tube placed through his nose into his belly for a couple feelings. The iv was titrated down based on baby's blood sugar being over 50 I believe until it was discontinued and even then we had to stay for another 24 hours to be sure he could still maintain his sugars without help.
    Little babies and big babies both have difficulties with blood sugars bc little babies have a harder time with latching and feeding and big babies require more to keep their sugars maintained.
    Hopefully you will only be there a couple days! Well wishes for you and baby!

    Yes we had blood sugar issues bc of my GD. It wasn't severe, so they let me feed her 10 minutes on each side and then I would give her a bottle. We haven't had any issues with breastfeeding

    @foxa319 your story sounds really similar to ours. He's currently receiving IV dextrose and will have to be monitored for 24 hours after his sugars have normalized. It's just been devastating to me that he's not with me. Now I'm being discharged tomorrow and he might not be home until Saturday or Sunday.
