3rd Trimester

How bigs your belly?

There are a lot of girls right now on my Facebook who are pregnant and a few of them are either the same week as me or give or take one. But even the ones who are behind me still have a bigger belly than me & it makes me worry that my little one isn't growing like she should be.. I had a lady at my work tell me I only look 3 months pregnant.. Is it because I'm just a small person in general? Or maybe I'm just carrying her different so that she doesn't show that much.. Need thoughts..

Re: How bigs your belly?

  • Everyone carries different. I'm almost 36 weeks and am smaller than a coworker when she was 20 weeks. I'm also carrying all belly. Don't stress as long as baby is growing well you have nothing to worry about.

  • Its all in how you carry. I look HUGE this time but its because all the weight I've gained is smack in my belly and for some reason this baby is not wanting to utilize the 6 inches directly below my rib cage. I was much smaller with my daughter but she was stretched between my rib cage and my pelvis pretty much the whole third tri so I didn't stick out as much.

I have a friend who is on her 4th baby and is 2 weeks behind me and looks like she is only 5 or 6 months along. Her baby is just stretched out more and she has a longer torso (we were both pretty small overall pre-pregnancy).

Its also more common to look smaller in your first pregnancy cause your muscles haven't gotten all stretched out yet. If you have a second you may very well get that big belly you are wanting (though I have no idea why you want it!).
  • Everyone carries differently. I started off with a retroverted uterus, so baby is sitting pretty far back and my belly doesn't stick out much. Most people tell me that I look 4-5 months pregnant max, and I'm 37 weeks.

As long as everything has been measuring fine and your doctor isn't concerned, I wouldn't be worried about it.

  • This is my tum (at only 11 weeks). I am 168cms tall, and pre pregnancy weighed 61kgs. My older sister was never this big at 39 weeks, let alone 11. She is about 10cms taller than me, and pre pregnancy only about 52kgs! She now has 3 healthy kids. Everyone varies a lot, even in familys!
  • I'm 37 weeks and only measuring 35 cm. I'm only carrying in my stomach
  • Does it really make a difference? Bloat, baby, amniotic fluid, uterus.. All due to pregnancy. In terms of strangers walking past, nobody thinks im 3 months bloated, they think im three months pregnant.

Yes, because scientifically you are bloated and not truly showing with baby. At 12 weeks baby is only about 5-6 centimeters long and has hardly any weight - approx 14 grams. Impossible to cause you to "show."

If the bloat goes down, you will not look "3 months pregnant" anymore, happens to a lot of women, happened to me.

I certainly agree that there is a lot of bloating in early pregnancy. However I think you missed what I was trying to say. As the original poster asked, there is no "wrong" size bump- all people vary, some bigger and some smaller. I posted my original photo to show how small my sister was throughout her entire pregnancy, and that was fine and healthy.
In my case, whilst I have certainly been bloated, i just wish people wouldn't paint every pregnancy with a "one size fits all" brush. By 11 weeks, according to my ob/gyn, my uterus was already just below my belly button. In the photo, my stomach was that size first thing in the morning, hard (and itchy!). Im sure the photo you posted is a good guide generally, but please be aware that as I said, one size does not always fit all.
  • Each pregnancy is different. Did you see the story of the model that retained her six pack all the way through her pregnancy? She still had a healthy baby.
