Sleeping arrangement (FTM, obviously lol)

So I'm wondering, we would like our baby to sleep in our room for the first few weeks and I'm wondering, can newborns sleep in a pack 'n play?  Or do they need a bassinet?  We have a crib but obviously would keep it in the nursery so I'm just wondering what would be safe to have the baby sleep in while in our room.  Co-sleeping wouldn't be an option just fyi so any advice would be greatly appreciated!  Thank u!

  • I think a lot of it has to do with what the baby prefers. We had a bassinet in our room and tried it for the first few nights and DS did not do well. So then we tried the rock n' play and he slept in that for months until we moved him to his crib. It just depends on what works for the family. But yes a pack n' play, rock n' play, bassinet, all will work!

  • A child does not need a specific place to sleep such as a bassinet, a play yard, a crib, etc.  Whatever works for you and your family, as long as it's safe (even if it's just a box big enough to fit baby in) is fine.

  • With my first we used the pack & play for the first 10-12 weeks. Once he started to move a lot more we transitioned to the crib.
I agree with previous posters that you may find out that baby prefers or sleeps better in different positions or places, so be open to making adjustments if needed.

  • My daughter slept in a pack n play in our room until she was about 3 months old.

We plan on having our crib by the bed since we have a small apartment and I'll be breast feeding.. He's probably just going to have a corner in our room and then we will just have a family member rent out the other room.. I got a really nice $250 pack n play for $75 at a consignment sale.. I'm thinking just having him in that for a few weeks right next to the bed for convenience..

Edit because my phone wrote like instead of nice..
  • We're going to try a rock n play. We'll see how it goes.

    Awesome!  Thanks to you all:)
  • With my first we used a packnplay at the end of the bed then transitioned to a crib when he was older. This time I bought an Armsreach cosleeper that fits beside the bed instead of a packnplay. I'm hoping it'll be easier with nursing.
  • With my daughter we ended up using a swing for most of the first 3 months.  She had terrible acid reflux and needed to sleep semi-upright.

  • We have a cradle my dad and grandfather made for me that I slept in. It wasn't ready when I came home from the hospital so I did actually sleep in a drawer for a few weeks.
  • I have done an arms reach bassinet for the first 3m in our room then moved to a pack n play with the top layer that can be a bassinet and when the figured out how to sit up moved it to a regular pack in play. My kids slept in my room until they were a year and then went into a crib in their own room. I set the playpen with bassinet up in our living room the first 3m so I could lay the baby down while I did stuff. Worked out great for us! We also co slept at times to.

My kids don't sleep through the night until about 10-12m so it was nice to have them right in my rio to take care of instead of having to go down the hall.
  • My son ended up switching between his swing and a boppy because his reflux was so bad. We had a pack n play that he used once he hit about 3 months and he didn't transition to a crib until 8 months. This time I've decided on a rock n play and we have a crib for his room. We will probably use the swing again too just because my first loved it so much.
  • We had the crib, bassinet, and pack-and-play and they both ended up sleeping in the bed attached to momma's boob all night. That's just what worked for us and allowed everyone to get the sleep we needed. I say have a couple of different options available, and then you will figure it out as you go.
  • What I've read is that pack and play bassinets are all good. Just to watch that some items are not meant for sleeping like car seats and boppys. I think some bouncers and swings say not for sleeping either but I don't know know anyone who didn't let ther
  • DD slept in the pack n play with bassinet attachment for the first 7 months or so. Pnp is awesome! Dd would also hang out in it woth some toys in the kitchen while i would cook and stuff.
  • I used to arms reach cosleeper with baby number one.
