Worrying call with midwife - possible pre term labour or just trapped gas

I woke up not feeling quite right. My lower back really aches and it goes all around the sides and into the front around the pelvic area. It's like that dull aching cramp you get just before or when your period starts. I feel like I'm bleeding and keep going to the bathroom to check but thankfully there's no blood. And baby has hardly moved today, he's been pretty consistent with movement at certain times of the day for the last week but not today. I've poked him, had a cold sugary drink and he's not doing very much.

I called my midwife and she said it could be a number of things, from trapped gas, to stretching to pre term labour!! So I've been told to go home and rest, take paracetamol and if it gets worse or I start bleeding to call the maternity unit at the hospital.

Now I'm in a panic because she said pre term labour.

Re: Worrying call with midwife - possible pre term labour or just trapped gas

  • Relax!!! Don't go to google!! Just relax and do as the midwife says.. Don't think about the worst because you will only stress yourself out!! As long as there is no blood you are ok.. Just relax..
  • Loading the player...
  • My suggestion to you is go up to the labour ward and maybe get yourself checked out. I'm not sure why your midwife mentioned pre term labour without an examination.
During pregnancy we get all types of aches and pains & yes some pains do feel like a dull period type pain.
Not be TMI but have you had a poop yet? Or when was the last time you pooped? I know I get pains like you have described when I've not been to the toilet.
  • Sheesh that's quite the span of possibilities! Hope you're feeling better soon and it's just gas!!

As @Ivyblue92 said, I'm surprised she mentioned previously term labor and does not want to evaluate you.
Maybe relax, drink plenty of water, and try to use the bathroom. If your having the same pain in an hour or 2 though, I would call a request and evealuation. More so because you said baby is not really moving even though you have been having pretty consistent movement.

  • When I had preterm labor with my first I had very distinguishable contractions. I could tell it was preterm because my entire abdomen was tightening up. I know when I've had a really bad gas bubble in the past it's kept the baby from moving much. Try laying on your stomach with a pillow propped under you, it will encourage the gas to move down and out. And maybe some Gas-X if you have any.
  • I'm with @Ivyblue92. I had very similar symptoms to what you are describing, and it turned out to be constipation. Go home, relax and try and enjoy your day! I'll be thinking of you-and please keep us posted!

I had something like this happen yesterday. It felt like a major gas bubble, but since I'm pregnant I second guessed if it truly was. I drank some water, laid down on my left side for awhile and then finally went and pooped. I felt immensely better after pooping. I think it was a combination of that and gas, because I haven't had any issues since. Not saying this is what you had, but it could be nothing like it was for me.

  • Prayers! Maybe it could be because of the heat and some mineral deficiency. I had a cramping feeling and had blood work. Low potassium and calcium. Maybe a propel water or some type of sports drink
  • I have that dull period like pains. But they calm down if I do. Drink water and relax as much as you can. That helps me a lot.

Definitely give a call and I never want to get anyone's hopes up as no two pregnancies are alike, but I had literally THIS over the weekend.  I went away for a mini vacation and was convinced I was going to start bleeding.  The pain kept me up throughout the night and when it finally kicked in it became painfully obvious that I had a stomach virus.  I am thinking that because I am pregnant and "backed up", it wasn't as obvious right away what the pain was but it truly felt like right before a period if not worse.  As other folks have said, drink lots of water and try to relax.  It could definitely be a GI issue or something else not as serious as what the range of possibilities could be.  Also since you're still fairly early on, try lying down quietly for a bit to see about movement.  When I was sick, I also didn't notice as much kicking.  Now that I'm doing better, it is right back to very noticeable again. Good luck!  I hope you feel better soon and all is well with LO.
  • I'm sorry you're having to deal with this right now.  If it's gas or constipation trying a couple of bicycle kicks or bringing your knees up towards your chest may help.  It always helps me get things moving.  *hugs*

Holy cow, not sure how I missed this post earlier! Oh, maybe because n'15 has the bmb confused with their Facebook newsfeed. So sorry you are dealing with this. Echoing pp's, I am also shocked that she would mention preterm labor... A friend who is 8 weeks had some spotting and some clear liquid discharge. She's had lots of fertility issues and has miscarried twice. She called her doctor because she was particularly concerned about the clear liquid. The nurse she talked to told her it could be her water breaking!!!?! WTF, why would you say that? Aside from the fact that your water can't really break at 7 weeks and you wouldn't notice if it did... Anyways, it's unfortunate that medical professionals are sometimes so loose with their words. Please try not to worry! I hope it's just a big deuce!!
