Evening primrose oil

has anyone else considered trying this ? Or have you tried it ?

Re: Evening primrose oil

  • Starting it tonight. My midwife says take two capsules with every meal and insert two at night. Supposed to help shorten and ease labor.

  • @Ckorines how many milligrams did she recommend ?
  • What you can insert them? Just the normal liquid capsules? You just put them right up there?
  • She didn't say the mg so to be safe I just went with the lesser of the two options. 500 mg. I was directed to take two with every meal and then put two up there before bed. Yup. Shove them up there. They are gel capsules and look similar to vitamin e pills. I will try tonight and let you know if I feel anything!
  • I took the pills for the first time with dinner tonight. I don't feel anything yet! By the way, midwife says don't attempt this till after 36 weeks. So please ask your doctor before trying this!
  • @Ckorines yeah I asked my doctor and he told me the same method of taking them , I was just curious if anyone was told different or what their experiences were if used with previous pregnancies !
  • Did you try it yet? I'm doing it tonight and I'm weirdly nervous.
  • They aren't to help induce labor so you won't be feeling anything. They are supposed to help thin you out and during labor. I've been taking them(2000 mg each) orally and vaginally daily for 2 weeks and no effacement has happened. So it doesn't work with everybody. Kind of disappointed
  • @Ckorines I took two with lunch , today's my first day & im oddly nervous too that's why I came on here posting hahaha
I'm just nervous about the whole sticking them up there thing hahaha but I'm gonna do it lol
  • @SucitUp your taking 2,000mg total daily ? Maybe take a higher mg. I would ask the doctor/midwife obviously before trying that but maybe
  • I feel the exact same way! Check in tmrw and let me know how you made out!
  • I've been taking 2000 mg three times a day ad inserting one at night for a week now. I also built up to that amount ad started weeks ago though. Nothing drastic is going to happen right off the bat. Nothing to be nervous about.
  • @Ckorines yes definitely check in tomorrow morning hahaha my next cervix check isn't till Wednesday but I'm already 50% thinned without the primrose oil so hopefully this helps !!
  • @Jennym2b have you thinned at all?
  • No I take 2000 orally and 2000 vaginally each day. So that's 4000 a day. I didn't ask my new dr before taking them and I'm not asking if I should take anymore then I'm already taking. Doesn't make a difference in my situation anyways since I have a scheduled csection in 7 days.
  • Ok so ladies how do you find out if you are thinning? Do your drs just do that for you? Australia does things so much different I am 36 weeks and my doc says they are ok to take 2×1000mg 3 times a day and then 1000mg at night vaginally....I am so fustrated I wanna know if im thinning or even starting to dilate...D:
  • @BabyBurraston they usually start checking at 38wks that's what my doctor told me , it's pretty painful so honestly trust me you wanna wait hahahahaha but I'm sure if you ask he'll check
  • I have been taking it since i was 32 weeks...it said it can take 8 weeks to work sooo i started early...my ob said it was fine...im hoping to c my lil man by 38 weeks...i take one 1300mg capsule twice a day and insert one n the evening...i wanna just insert all of them but it leaks out sooo the best time is at night
  • I tryed taking these and it didn't help at all, just made me sick!

OKAY :) so I've been taking 2 pills after every meal and inserting one at night before I go to sleep , I started June 24th and was 50% thinned at that time .
After a week of taking these at my appointment today I was a third of the way thinned and 2cm dilated :D:D:D
  • @BabyBurraston -- It may sound crude, but you can wash your hands and check yourself.  My midwives don't check at all (before or during labor).  Maybe this is TMI, but I lost my mucous plug after having sex one day, and so I decided to "check" myself to see what was going on up there.  While I can usually feel my cervix (it feels like a small nose up there), I was surprised to find that it was incredibly soft - gelatinous - and barely there.  "Checking yourself" won't tell you if you are 1 cm dilated and 60% effaced or 2 cm dilated and 80% effaced or whatever, but those percentiles don't mean much anyway.  Being dilated or effaced serves to show you that you're progressing.  If that's what you're interested in, a self-check will do!
  • @wheresilenceismusic how did you know like where to feel for it ? Idk of that question makes sense but idk what I'm feeling for up there if I were to try to self check hahahaha
  • @haayitstayy -- good question!  normally, your vagina feels the inside of your cheek: relatively soft and smooth.  if you feel yourself, you'll feel that soft and smooth feeling on all sides, probably with folds and pretty hot and swollen at this point in pregnancy.  it will be shaped like a cylinder.  at the very end of the cylinder / at the top of your vagina, deep inside, you'll find your cervix.  it's impossible to miss.  normally, it is about as hard as the tip of your nose and it sticks out about 4cm.

if you haven't effaced at all, your cervix will still be hard.
if you have effaced, your cervix will be soft.  100% effaced feels like jellyfish.
if you have dilated, your cervix will actually be open.  so -- you won't feel anything up there.  in this case, i wouldn't poke around too much, because if you are a few centimeters dilated, you could potentially perform a semi-sweep of your membranes (stick your finger between your uterus and your amniotic sac / bag of water.

like penises, some vaginas are longer than others.  mine is about 4-6 inches deep.  i DEFINITELY cannot stick my entire hand up my vagina, so checking myself can be tricky --- it's hard for my fingers to reach my cervix!  some tips:
-- i can only feel my cervix if my vagina has ballooned out after i am aroused (for instance, shortly after having sex)
-- it helps to squat (the last time i did it i was in the shower and i put one leg up on the side of the bathtub so as to 'open' myself for more easy access)

    most importantly, Wash Your Hands!!

    & good luck!
  • @wheresilenceismusic well I'm 2cm dilated so good thing I didn't go feelin around hahaha but thanks for such a good description! I would've had no idea!!
