Ways to fill the day

So since I got home from the hospital I'm trying to do one thing each day. This is for the baby to get out of the house and see the world, as well as for my sanity to not stay all cooped up in the house. I also take the baby out for lots of walks now and I'm recovered and can get around.

My question is for days that you're indoors for all or part of the day that you're indoors what activities can you do with such a young baby?

I want to keep her entertained, I want to help her grow and develop, but I also don't know a lot of things you can do with a newborn. I am just trying so hard not to catch up on Netflix which is my temptation!!! (Esp now that OITNB season 3 just came out!!!). I know while that is fun for me it's not necessarily good for the baby to be around TV!

Right now we will read a book here and there, try to do some tummy time (but she hates it) and play on her play mat gym. What other ways do you all fill the day with a newborn, what does your daily schedule look like with such a young baby? This is my first so I'm pretty clueless and any advice is much appreciated!

  • Along with the things you mentioned, I just try to talk to him a lot and bounce him a bit on my lap and have him in different positions throughout the day.

  • My DD likes her playmat a lot. I started putting her on that at about 2 weeks and now at 11 she seems to recognize it and get excited to be put there.

This is my second so it crazy here. My parents live 2 seconds away so I'm with them pretty much everyday and my mother watches my niece so my oldest gets to play with her while I care and play with the baby and don't have to feel guilty.

  • I'm having this issue too. I hate to just put him in his swing or on his playmat and leave him but I'm not sure what to do with him. I hold him and talk to him and all that stuff but there's only so long that holds their attention.
  • Agreed. It's hard to find things to do with such a young baby. I also think that babies at this age still need to primarily be sleeping unless they're awake to eat. So our awake time is very limited.

Usually I will sing songs to DS (wheels on the bus, etc), talk to him, time on his playmat. I try to put him in the swing or the bouncer but usually he cries. Sometimes I read to him but usually that's more right before bed.

Otherwise I spend most of my time feeding, changing, and rocking him to sleep.
  • I told our 3 year old that baby is new to the world and we have to tell him what everything is. So I narrate a lot of what I'm doing and take his hands to touch things like soft, hard, smooth, etc. It's cute to see his big brother show him his toys and what sounds they make.
  • Everyone is right. There isn't much to do other than show them the world. Talk as much as you can. It's very hard having a one sided conversation but it's good for them.
In a few months, they will become more playful! It seems like forever right now.
