frequent bathroom trips:water conservation

We have all been peeing a lot more lately (if you haven't please drink more water). For me this is one of the most frustrating parts of pregnancy, specifically the mid-sleep trips to the bathroom. Well we had a water shortage a couple months back and we learned just how much water a toilet uses to flush. Seems SO unnecessary for the tiny amounts of pee I´m putting in there! SO we´ve stopped flushing pees! At least the first few anyways. I wish I had some comparison to see how this has affected our monthly water bill, but I have some peace of mind that at least we are conserving water. Sure, we have to clean the toilets more frequently. But that's not difficult, and I love the smell of our toilet bowl cleaner (we use Mrs. Meyers, highly recommend it! lol). Has anyone else had some environmental guilt over our frequent toilet flushing??? Anyone else changing their flushing habits or am I just a weirdo? lol! Also we have two cats so we've had to be extra mindful of keeping the toilet lid down!

Re: frequent bathroom trips:water conservation

  • I never flush the toilet all night. My 8 trips nightly to the bathroom sit in there and then I flush in the morning. It is kind of nice too because I can see if I lost my mucus plug or anything at night because I just have a nightlight in the bathroom when I go at night. Also it's too loud and I don't want to wake DH or DS with my constant peeing.
  • Loading the player...
  • I'll wake up in the morning and the toilet will be filled with pee and toilet paper and I'll flush after my morning pee!
  • If it's yellow let it mellow... The rule at night in our house! Lol
  • We don't flush either and I throw the TP in the trash if I remember to to keep from clogging when we finally flush.
  • If I just go a little bit at home I don't flush, but bigger pees I do.

There's a half bath attached to our bedroom that DH doesn't use too often. I like to go in there if he's home for a little bit of privacy
  • I lived in a cabin in the woods for 5 years and our water was spring fed from up on the mountain.  If I flushed too much we would literally run the spring dry.  This got me in the habit of rarely flushing post-pee.  Like PP said, if it's yellow, let it mellow! :)

You know what I think is crazy?!  The same water that comes out of your faucet is the water that goes in to your toilet.  It's all potable.  Nuts!  We are so incredible lucky to live in a place where clean drinking water isn't an issue.
  • I live in California and we are in a serious drought. I only flush every few pee's or when the bowl is filling up with too much TP.

ashleytiff  THANKS FOR THE TIP I've been using the trashcan more lately.
  • Also in California, so we've been following the "if it's yellow let it mellow" rule for over a year now.

If you want to flush more often but don't have low flow toilets, place rocks on the tank to lessen the amount of water it needs to fill up.
