scheduled csections?

Ill preface this post by apologizing if its been discussed before..cant find what im looking for.

I am 32+6 weeks and baby is breech. I have another ultrasound in 4 weeks. OB says if he is not head down by then we can either try a version ( which i know i dont want to do) or plan a csection for 39 weeks.

Being a FTM i have mixed feelings about this but also being a type A. Personality i feel that planning a csection a mere 2 weeks ahead of time is too short notice. How far in advance are sections scheduled? Im really just scared of going into labor before my booked section!

I had to have a scheduled c section at 39 weeks with DS. He was breech. In l&d before they hooked me up to the iv they did one last ultrasound to make sure he hadn't turned. It was scheduled at 37 weeks.

I have to have a repeat c section with this little guy. Not sure yet when it will be scheduled. I am currently 32 weeks.

Most scheduled c/sections are scheduled at 37 weeks for breech presentation for sometime in the 39th week. It is not short notice as other women have their scheduled c/sections. They schedule for 39 weeks in the hopes that you will not go into labor before hand because honestly a lot of FTM and moms in general do not go that early. Hope this helps.

I'm scheduled for mine on August 3rd (I'll be 39 weeks). I have a very large fibroid blocking the baby's exit route. They have told me from the beginning that I would need a c section, but didn't plan it until I was 30 weeks. I also have to go in to the hospital this week for an additional ultrasound so they can figure out where to do the incision since the fibroid is also blocking the normal place. Of course that is a whole other story.

I think I waited until 38/39wks last time to schedule my csection last time because I was hoping to avoid it. My csection is not scheduled yet for this pregnancy and I had an appointment today at 32wk3days.

My baby is breech and I'm declining a scheduled csection. I'll hopefully attempt a vaginal breech if baby doesn't flip, but will wait until I'm actually in labour and try before I agree to a section.

Just like @brielee333, I have known all along that I would need a csection due to fibroid issues. I asked my doctor about scheduling it at my 28w appointment. I am scheduled on 8/24 and my due date is 8/29

My kid is breech as well. But my DD was head down face down but due to problems I had to have a c-section. So, since my Dr is a fan of vbacs (and I don't want one) we decided on a csection for this baby as well.

Your doc is ok with a vaginal breech delivery? I've not heard of this being done in recent years.

In any case I wouldn't want to schedule a c section too soon because between 33-39 weeks baby could always flip.

I'm attempting a vbac, but if it doesn't go that way my c-section is scheduled for August 3 (39wks). I had the original c-section since DS was breech. They tried to turn him manually, but it didn't even come close to working (and was quite painful).

Are you against an external version? My office only does external, not internal. I'd defiantly want to try this before having surgery.

I have placenta previa so I have a scheduled c-section at 38 weeks. C-section is booked for mid July!

I had a vaginal breech delivery with my son in 2012. He was a surprise breech, but my Dr was ok with me going forward with a vaginal delivery. I did deliver him in the OR in case of a need for an emergency c-section, but I was able to push him out myself. It is possible - even for a FTM - he was my first baby. And on the bigger side too at 8lb 5oz. My daughter was born in 2013 at 7lb 7oz...she was out in two pushes during an unmedicated delivery. I joke that her brother "paved the way" for her - which is probably partly true. I'm hoping this one is just as "easy"

@deviduke412 ive read and watched alot about ecv's and to me it just not feel right (not that i expect a c section to be a walk in the park either) but i guess i will have to wait and see.. Something tells me he isnt going to flip. The sonographer said he was sitting upright with his bum on my cervix..must be comfy!

I have a good friend that did some specific type of acupuncture made for this and her baby flipped. It may be worth a try!

We did a tentative scheduled c-section with my DD for her EDD if she didn't turn. I want to say we scheduled it at around 36 or 37 weeks. If she had turned it would have been canceled. She never turned.

This time we scheduled my RCS at like 28 weeks or so for the date (day before EDD cause EDD is on Saturday), but I won't know the time until 2 days before. It just depends on how the surgeries gets scheduled that day. I will either have a 7am, 8am, or 12pm slot. It was similar with DD. Even though they scheduled the date, the time was not set until a couple days before. I figure that is still a lot more notice then I would have if I went into labor on my own!

I just scheduled my c-section (31 weeks) for 37 weeks due to placenta previa. I mainly did that so I could get the first surgery of the day (8:30am).

Time to flip. There are doctors who will do a vaginal breech I also found one who would do a breech vbac had my baby not flipped

My DD was breech. I attempted an external version and it was incredibly painful. It didn't work and I wish I wouldn't have attempted it. They scheduled my csection for 39w.

Lots of advice on the spinning babies website. My DD2 was breech until 36 weeks, I credit the Reboza for her eventual head down movement.

I scheduled my csection early only because they offered to put me in the book so to speak. I was probably at 20 weeks. Last pregnancy labor did not progress and babies heart rate dropped on contractions so they would not induce medically. I could try vbac but have a feeling my body just won't do its job... I scheduled for 39w5days

Did everyone get ultrasounds when finding out their baby was breech? I am getting a little annoyed at my office as I have only had one scan (which I know is typical) for the anatomy scan around 20 weeks. At my appt yesterday they said the baby was now breech but no scan was mentioned, etc. I had to have a c-section with my first and was really hoping to try VBAC this time. I guess I am asking is it typical for them to do a scan to monitor things or am I still just going to have to go in blindly until the end with external feels and heartbeat listens?

@suzienickles10 my ob did a routine scan at 31w to check growth. DS was head down, but they found fluid in his kidney so i was referred to a MFM specialist the next week for second opinion and ultrasound. At 32 weeks he flipped up and was breech- thats how i found out.

They can usually tell position by palpating. But if you are between c section and vbac I would probably want a scan too

Yes, this is where I am just getting a little frustrated. I know there is still time the baby could possibly turn but not having a growth scan, etc. is kind of a bummer so we can see what is going on in there. I will maybe press this more in the next few weeks

My c-section was scheduled this week, for 37wks. BUT, I am probably the only exception to the 39wk rule! I've had 3 previous emergency c-sections at or before 37wks because my body starts shutting random organs down...it's ridiculous! I will say, with my last 2, I had them scheduled for 39wks at my 36wk visit. The only reason I had this one scheduled so soon was because my husband is looking at changing jobs and would need a date to be able to tell his new employer, plus my OB knows my history and I'm high risk. Most "normal" healthy pregnancies are scheduled for delivery at 39wks when you go to your 37wk appointment. If you are worried about short notice, start making your plans now so that you have plenty of time if something changes.

I knew I would have to have a c section from the beginning. Mine was scheduled when I was 20 weeks.

My MW palpated my belly and realized baby was breech. I'll have an u/s at 36 weeks because it's mandatory before one can be scheduled for an ECV. Hopefully baby flips before then so I can cancel the scan and continue my planned homebirth.

I scheduled mine at 16 week. This is my second C section. My first was an emergency after 17hr of labor .

@Suzienickles10 - I am also hoping for a VBAC this time. I don't know for sure, but I'm 99% sure she's head down already. I am doing nonstress tests on a weekly basis and the heart beat monitor has gotten lower by over an inch over the last 3 weeks. It's definitely below my belly button.

If you're concerned, have your doctor feel and explain how s/he knows baby is breech or head down. Also, if breech and you need to schedule, demand a scan a few days before your scheduled section to "make sure" baby is still breech. My friend just delivered a baby who flipped at 39 weeks (and he was a 9+ pounder inside a 110 pound woman, so no excuses about room!). There's still time.

As a note - I've had three four ultrasounds for this pregnancy. One at 6 weeks when the hospital told me I was miscarrying. One at 7 weeks when my midwife didn't buy into the hospital's diagnosis and sent me to MFM where they found a healthy baby and heartbeat. A dating ultrasound at 9 weeks and the anatomy scan at 19 weeks. As long as everything is healthy, there's really no reason to have an ultrasound after 20 weeks, except to confirm baby's position before birth. When I was induced with #1, they did a quick scan on the L&D floor just to confirm she was head down.

Thanks @wering... I should have been more clear I do understand only 1 scan is usually protocol unless there are issues. I just want to be sure, like you said, baby hasn't flipped before we go in for another c-section towards the end. Also, I never received a scan before hand with my first, was in a long, painful labor only to have a c-section because he was transverse. I know babies can flip at any time it just would have been a little nice to know before going into l&d.

I guess I need some education from some experienced mamas (out of curiousity)... Why do they schedule you for 39 week csections? Why not give baby every chance possible to flip before going to a csection conclusion? I've heard of babies flipping into position once labor starts. Like I said, I haven't researched this so I'm curious why this seems to be a procedure.

My guess (not a medical professional) is that they want to do it before you go into labor on your own, so they have more control over the process and less chance baby could end up in distress.

Again just a guesstimate

I had a c-section with my son in 2007. I went into labor at 39 weeks on a Monday. I stopped dilating, so they tried pitocin(didn't work) and then tried cervadill(didn't work). They told me that Thursday that I'd need a c-section. We got to go home that Sunday(Easter).
I'll be having a c-section August 7th given that I can make it that long. I'm high risk, so we're going week to week now on a hope and a prayer!

I've been told its so that they can try and prevent a prolapsed cord which is more likely if you go into labor with a breech baby. That being said, my doctor allowed me to pick a date between 39 and 41 weeks (1 week before to 1 week after) for my daughter. I chose her EDD. I wanted to give her as much time as possible but had heard meconium aspiration is more likely with c-section babies that are "overdue" and could mean NICU time (the hospital I deliver at doesn't have a NICU so baby would have to be transported to nearby larger hospital with one, and I would be stranded till released at the original hospital).

This time around I chose the day before EDD (EDD is due date). I'll see what happens this time as far as baby being breech still is at almost 34 weeks), dropping, dilating, etc... on whether its better advised to do it earlier. Right now though the doctor is perfectly ok with the chosen date.
