Satin robes for labor?!

I've seen on etsy and pintrest these beautiful robes they claim are for labor and delivery. Am I just confused, because I thought you wore a hospital gown (assuming a hospital birth)? Are these satin robes to wear afterwards to look nice for visitors? I think a satin robe will be the furthest thing from my mind after delivery. Opinions or explanations?

Re: Satin robes for labor?!

  • my hospital said I can wear my own clothes. my doula suggested a skirt and a nursing top. I've heard a lot of hospitals do make you wear their gown tho, and I personally wouldn't wear something that can't get dirty.

  • (but yes, the Etsy ones are for people who want to give birth in them. but to me it seems like a bad idea.)
  • I have seen those. Our hospital makes you wear their gowns for the labor. I personally would not wear anything I wouldn't want ruined because things get pretty nasty. Plus I have enough laundry with 6 kids and myself and hubby, I do not need more when I get home from the hospital.

Why spend money on something that will most likely get ruined when the hospital provides gowns? It's just way too frivolous and unnecessary IMO.

I wore gowns the entire 3 days I was in the hospital - anyone who is coming to visit me doesn't give 2 sh*ts if i'm wearing a satin robe or cotton tatters.  PS - Nobody cares about you anymore, they're there for the baby ;)
    WORD! ;) LOL!
  • I've been eyeballing some of the gorgeous floral silk robes for delivery on esty as well, but I wouldn't want to give birth in them lol, not something so pretty. I just like the idea of something pretty to wear when I'm recovering and feel terrible afterwards
  • I'm kinda a big robe wearing person and I would only wear one after the birth just to feel human again but definitely not during labor! Certainly don't want to ruin anything I own!
  • I have a floral robe from etsy I bought for pregnancy and then pictures at the hospital. Technically I believe it says labour gown but it's just a robe really. With my first I had a black night gown and I was sooo pale and look completely awful and washed out so this time I thought I'd get a pretty robe to wear. I'll use it all summer too.

I actually have some of those robes/gowns favorited on Etsy because I'm considering getting one. Not sure if I want to spend the $$ though. Some of them are a little pricey. With my son I just wore the gown provided during labor and switched to a gown/robe I brought with me (simple and plain) afterwards.
  • Every time I wear a satin robe, I sweat profusely. If I'm going to wear a robe, I'll get a nice light cotton one so I can stay cool. I'll most likely wear the hospital gowns for all the nasty dirty stuff then change into a more comfy outfit that's a little more cute. Besides, we will be giving birth in September and it is still hot where I'm from.
  • I bought a robe on clearance for $12 about a week before delivery. Not to be pretty just to be comfortable. The 4 days I was in the hospital I wore tank tops with a robe so I could sit with it open and have the blanket cover my bottom half. then I finally put yoga pants on to go home. Nothing got ruined though, thankfully. I wore that robe every day for the first rough six weeks of breastfeeding.
  • I hate hospital gowns. I laboured in my own clothes with #1 until my water broke. Then I wore the gowns for practicality. Once I was settled in my room with the baby I cleaned up a bit and put on a nursing tank and flowy black pj pants. I brought my favourite robe (fleece with satin trim) to wear, it helped me feel human and was nice for pictures with visitors.

I wore the hospital gown the whole time. I would start sweating really bad and it was nice to just throw a fresh one on. But it's all preference.
As far as labor, if be hesitant to wear anything I liked too much, just in case.
  • I was considering one because I have to get something to wear myself. Apparently they give you nothing in German hospitals. Blah! I just don't understand what if you have unexpected early labor or something and you are not prepared. I guess I will find out for sure when I do the tour.

  • I have been on the search for a light weight robe. Since I do live in southern Alabama, it will be blazing hot until Thanksgiving at least :) But I do get really cold in hospitals. I think I may just go with the gown and bring something to change into after all is said and done and most importantly clean! Talking about all of this is getting me so excited for my LO to make her big arrival.
  • I would rather wear a hospital gown. I'm a FTM and have no experience with labor but all I can think about is... body fluids. Satin makes me think sexy. I don't think I'll be feeling sexy. I don't think I'll be feeling anywhere close to sexy. Maybe it's a memory thing? The same way people spend a lot of money on a wedding gown they intend to wear only once.
