A/S - How much can you see?

Due to a lot of traveling this month we have our anatomy scan/US a week from today, at 24w. We're still team green and don't want to know, so I'm wondering...how much will we need to look away, so as not to see the babe's genitalia? Of course we will inform our US tech of our wishes and I'm assuming she will tell us to turn our heads, or she will turn the screen, but I'm so excited to see our LO I know I'll be antsy! DH probably could look the entire time and have no idea, but I've seen so many of you ladies' scans that I feel like I have a keen eye now. Can you share your experience with me?

Let the tech know when he/she is getting close to the genital area so you can look away. You should be able to see the head, spine, feet, hands, etc. Hope you have a great scan!

We are team green and looked at the screen the whole time. Our tech said there's no reason to check that area unless we wanted to know. I don't think it's as obvious as people think it would be. There's a lot of black and white lines in those images, hard to tell what a lot of it is! Good luck!

We only had to look away for maybe 30 seconds or a minute while they checked. We saw everything else. Good luck!

We went at 20 weeks and were able to look the majority of the time because the baby was in a position that we couldn't see much anyway. However, we went back last week at 24 weeks and now that the baby is bigger, we were told to close our eyes most of the time

Going back again in 2 weeks (tracking growth because I'm on the small size) so hopefully we get to see more without having to shut our eyes the whole time!!

If they have a large viewing screen for the parents to view the image, I would ask fir it to be kept off, that way you just have the smaller screen the US tech uses. That's what friends of mine did. That way if baby changes position suddenly they don't let you know themselves what their sex is!

When our tech done the femur bone measurement I could see quite clearly what we are having. So perhaps turn away when they do that measurement

I told the tech that we didn't want to know the sex, so he told me to turn away at one point. It was literally about 1 full minute. The rest we could easily see. Just make sure you tell them ahead of time that you don't want to know. They do this everyday, so they'll make sure not to make it obvious to you!

I had another US last week (23 weeks) and the baby was much bigger than at my A/S at 20 weeks. They could no longer fit the whole baby on the screen. So unless the genitalia is front and center, there's a good chance you won't be able to accidentally see it.

Our office only looks if we want to know the sex so we didn't have to look away at all!

You can look away and just ask when they are done to show you just the head or something. They control what to look at.

Even when they pointed it out I was like...yeah sure I see it (while seeing myself shaking my head no). I wouldn't even know what to look for. I've seen stuff about two lines and three lines but I wouldn't know it the lines I were seeing were it but also the screen I had was far away and not up close so that could make a difference. I would think as long as you told them ahead of time they would let you know to look away, etc.

Honestly, even when I was shown the genitalia, I had no clue what I was looking at and had to just had to trust that what they were saying was a penis was, in fact, a penis. To me, it was all just a weird blur. Could have just as easily have been a vagina. I agree with everyone else - as long as you tell them you don't want to know, they should tell you when you shouldn't look.

We've gotten lots of shots of our boys' parts during leg measurements (that were very obvious) so I'd ask the tech to let you know when to look away.

It's not just the leg measurements, she showed us a whole belly/face shot, and I could clearly see "three legs", although I don't think she meant too. But we wanted to know, so we were okay with it.

I guess is would depend on the tech. The last time the tech was really nice and understanding and had us turn away any time there was even a chance we could see something. Our tech this time wasn't as accommodating. We told her we didn't want to know and she was kind of rude about telling us that she had stuff to look at and she was just going to do it and we had to hope that we couldn't see anything. They do have to look at the bladder and you can have a pretty clear shot when they try to look at that.

I would also recommend looking away any time they put the ultrasound thing on your belly. You never know what position the baby is going to be in when they first start.

She just told us to turn away maybe for a minute or two. She spent most of her time trying to get good shots of the heart.

Our little guy is an acrobat and was flipping around like crazy so we got many views of it, haha. Fortunately we wanted to know (and already did at that point).

I'd just say be open with the tech about your wishes but prepared that sometimes babies have their own ideas and if yours is as active as mine, try not to be disappointed if he/she gives you a surprise preview.

Our tech asked before we started the scan and double checked to make sure before she check that area.
