WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) PSA

edited June 2015 in July 2015 Moms
Good afternoon, Mamas!

I never thought that I would be eligible for WIC benefits: my husband serves the military, and although our finances are tight, we still manage to save a little each month.  Well, I have great news to share.  After reading that over half of American women and children qualify for WIC benefits (supplemental food), I met with our local office today to discover that my family qualifies, too.

Here are the income guidelines to qualify:

-- If you are a family of 2, you can make $29,101 each year or less, or $2,426 each month.
-- If you are a family of 3, you can make $36,612 each year or less, or $3,051 each month.
-- If you are a family of 4, you can make $44,123 each year or less, or $3,677 each month.

Military families like ours shouldn't count the BAH as part of their yearly or monthly income.

To qualify, you also need to be:

 -- pregnant
-- postpartum (up to six months after your LO is born)
-- breastfeeding (up to your LO's fifth birthday)

The benefits for our family of 3 (me + DH + LO) are modest.  We received vouchers for an incredible amount of milk and cheese, for two boxes of cereal, four cans of beans, two containers of juice, bread, eggs, peanut butter, and $10 worth of fresh fruits and vegetables, all to last us the month.  Still -- every little bit helps!

A nurse took my weight and pricked my finger to check for anaemia.  (I take an iron supplement as well as my prenatal, so I was not anaemic.)  I met with a nutritionist for a diet consultation.  I also met with a lactation specialist who will call me once a week, every week, postpartum to help troubleshoot in case anything goes wrong.

I had a great morning today at the WIC office.  I am so very grateful that this program exists.  If the program saves us $100/month, then that is $100/month more that we can budget towards diapers or car repairs.  And since half of American families qualify for the program, I know that some of you Mamas here on the Bump can benefit from this information and from my story.
If you have a hardworking family like mine that can benefit from an extra boost... call your local WIC office!  It's another friendly resource that sets the foundation for the long-term health of your kids.

I read somewhere online that you can add your unborn child as a plus one towards amount of people in your family. For example if you are pregnant and married with no other children, you'd consider it a family of 3. Is this accurate?

Yes -- you're right.  You will count your unborn child as a member of the household.

Here's a prescreening tool that you can use to see if you qualify if you are unsure:

  • The income guidelines vary state to state.

    Married 03/18/10
    DS #2 Born 05/19/11

Looks like it is a Federal program so it shouldn't vary by state.

Is the father/husband/signicant other not count towards the income?

And you include the income of everyone living in the house regardless of relation.

They shouldn't? They use national guidelines, I thought, based on the national income poverty rates?

Just because I know when we looked into it (we make $200 too much per month for a family of 5, because they go by gross pay) I thought it was ridiculous because in, say, Iowa, it would be easy for a family of 5 to make under $51,005 annually (and be able to live just fine), but here in So. Cal. it would be really difficult to raise a family of 5 on that.

  • Does anyone know what breast pumps they provide in Florida? It's a long shot I know but I haven't bought mine yet because I wasn't sure what kind they covered.
  • @bnmccann  -- The WIC office here "rents" breast pumps for free.  I'm not sure which types are offered.

Many WICs here no longer rent or give out pumps because insurance companies now cover the cost of a pump. Have you looked into a pump through your health insurance?

  • I'm in NC.  Call your local WIC office!!  :)
  • Okay good point... I actually have two insurances and NEITHER of them cover breast pumps because they are "grandfathered out of it" What a bunch of crap. And I only want to use a closed system pump because of the mold issue
  • I used to work for the state of Arizona. To clarify, federal programs that rely on federal poverty guidelines, like WIC, have certain income thresholds for the Lower 48 states that are all the same. Then Alaska and Hawaii each have their own income thresholds.
  • I'm currently on WIC I get the same things you get (I live in California) but it doesn't last us the whole month lol

  • I also have wic.right now I am staying with my parent, my 2.5 children and 3 siblings.. (Lol sounds like the Brady bunch) my parents make great money. My brother moved from Maine and is staying till he gets his own place. I came back recently cause I'm apparently a loser, and my two other siblings are 16 and 18.. They go by my parents income, as I am not working right now (obviously) which is really weird they would use there income since I'm 27.. But there the head of house. They didnt ask if anyone else was working either.. Just the owners of the house and how many people live here. I love wic because it helps with formula of course! But I also am more inspired to eat better. And be healthier. I love meeting with a nutritionist. And plan to go with another one, after 6 weeks are up. I used to feel like a scum bag because I was using government assistance.. (People can be so ignorant) but it's a huge help, and that's what it's for. I'll be going to school and working once she is born.. And I do need the extra help.
  • If anyone has medicaid, they can automatically receive WIC and not have to count income. But WIC is the only place that counts an unborn child as a person in a household.
  • WIC is a fantastic program. We used it growing up and my friend who was pregnant at 19 used it. She was able to stay in school, graduate collage on time and now has a 16 yr old son.
