Sugar drink

Hi, had anyone taken their Drink a sugar drink yet before blood work? How did you feel in your body after? Thank you, looking forward to your responds

Re: Sugar drink

  • I felt no different, maybe a bit sugar buzzed.  My doc was listening to my baby afterwards and he was moving around like crazy so I’m sure he felt it.  But I failed the test.  Now I have to take the 3 hour on Monday.  My doctor also gave me a carb loading diet where I have to eat a lot of carbs and sugars this weekend.  The next drink is supposed to be double the amount of sugar as the drink in the 1st test. Ugh.

  • Thank you Rikke for your responds. Good luck with your next test, you will do great.
  • I did mines today and it made my stomach hurt but you should feel ok it taste like flat soda
  • I had a headache and just felt kind of gross for a couple hours after the test with my first. I passed. For this pregnancy I don't go until mid July and I'm dreading but just because I don't handle needles well... The drink part is not such a big deal.

  • I thought it wasn't as bad as I had been hearing. I wouldn't choose to drink it on the average day but it wasn't horrible. It did give me a headache and I felt shaky for about 20 mins. The rest of the day the baby was moving around like crazy! So that part was actually pretty neat.
  • I haven't had my test yet this pregnancy, but with DS, I don't remember feeling much different. The drink is gross (like watered down flat soda), but it's not that bad.

  • Thank you to everyone who answered me. I was a little nervous how it would affect my body, as I have not been taken in sugar for 6 years now. But now I hear all of your safe stories I feel better and more brave

It gave me a bit of a sugar buzz, but otherwise I felt completely normal.
  • What at what week did you ladies do this test?
  • I just did mine yesterday and (to me) the drink was good hahaha the worst part is waiting an hour to have your blood drawn :) I was surprised because I have heard such awful things about it but everyone is different :) I got mine done at 24 weeks
  • I actually loved the drink hahah. However, I crashed later in the day but I am anemic so it could have been related to losing blood!

At my OB's office, the GD test is optional. Recommended, but optional. If you are very uncomfortable with drinking the sugar drink, you can request to opt out of the testing for GD. If you are very careful with what you eat, which is sounds like you are, you probably won't have insulin issues anyway. I know it can happen to healthy women, but it is quite rare for women who eat very health-conscious diets and exercise regularly to develop GD. Again, it does happen, but it's uncommon.

  • So i have never actually drank the drink. Last time my midwife had me eat a banana and drink 6oz of grape juice because it has the same amount of sugar as the drink. My midwife this time is letting me do the same

  • I never could get the drink to stay down for the completion of the test. I don't do sugary foods or drinks in general and the GD drink triggered such an extreme gag reflex in me that my dr just ordered a high carb meal for me to eat instead of drinking the drink. I would take waffles with strawberries over sugar drink any day!
  • I did the GD test at 28 weeks with DD and I think it's the same this time. I hate really sugary drinks. Normal people can enjoy a lemonade or something like that, but I make my glass with 1 part lemonade, 3 parts water and ice. I really don't feel well when I have such concentrated amounts of sugar. With that said, it's only one day and only one drink. It's seriously NBD.

@twogirlsandagreen, I am a little surprised that it's optional at your clinic if people are uncomfortable with the drink. That seems really unusual to me. Can anyone opt out??

It's just optional in general, not specifically because of the drink. And yes, our office "encourages" all pregnant women to take the GD test, but it is totally optional. I am doing it because my last dd was 9lbs at birth, which was a solid 2lbs heavier than her big sis. Both of us tested negative for diabetes (me during pregnancy and her after birth).
  • I haven't taken the test yet, but from what I can tell (and from my best friend who took her test a few weeks ago), it's really not that bad. Kinda gross drink, might make you feel kinda blah the rest of the day, but otherwise not terrible. My best friend definitely doesn't shy away from whining and complaining and she didn't have any complaints aside from the flat soda taste.  ;)

  • Thank you for all of your replies.
  • My doctor gave me mine today to drink before my appointment next month.  It looks a lot different than I was expecting.
I'm more worried about the blood draw and the shot (I get a shot that same day since I am RH-) than the drink.

Just took mine today! I actually semi liked the drink, too. Like another poster said, it's not something I'd drink everyday by any means but it wasn't torture like others had said. It reminded me of a melted orange Popsicle in a glass.
I crashed after the test, fell asleep on the floor, but baby was busy busy! Holy moly! That drink got him/her all hyped up and was kicking away all afternoon! So fun to lay and feel baby so active in there. Found myself giggling a few times at all the movement.
    Good luck with yours!
  • My midwives just have me eat or drink 50 grams of carbs... I don't have to do the drink this time around! Whew!
  • I had my test yesterday. Mine was a clear "fruit punch" drink. It was pretty tasty and it was ice cold which made it better. It made me feel a little sugar jittery afterwards and my tummy a bit rumbly but nothing too bad. The worse for me is the blood drawing but even that went really well yesterday!
