Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Should a toddler and a newborn share a room?

We have a very small house. My toddler is going to be 23 months when my daughter is born in November. We are considering they share a room, but my toddler does not sleep well and is awoken easily. I am concerned that my newborn will wake her up in the middle of the night and she will become jealous when we take the baby into our bed and leave her to CIO in her crib every two hours...currently, we sometimes let her come and sleep in our bed with us when she cries in the middle of the night...

Do any of you have this issue or have you tried this and it worked? Did it fail? Why or why not? Did your toddler grow jealous of the baby because of this? :(

Re: Should a toddler and a newborn share a room?

  • Can you start sleep training your toddler now? I hopes that she might be a better sleeper in a few months?

Can the newborn sleep in your room for the first few months, until NB is sleeping longer stretches?

  • Our newborn is sleeping in our room in a bassinet so she doesn't wake our two year old, once she sleeps through most of the night they will share a room.

The issue was the same for my sister with her toddler and newborn. Once she became pregnant with her two year old daughter, then she started thinking the same like how the toddler will react when she see the baby in her arms and when newborn sleeps beside her etc. Then my mother and her friends suggested to prepare her 2 year old for the newborn by spending most of the time with her, keep talking about the newborn, praising her, convincing her and making her excited about the newborn etc. Finally she prepared her two year old for the newborn, now she is happy with her two children. Hope you will get more ideas from these https://www.momjunction.com/articles/ways-get-toddler-prepare-new-baby_0074394/

Have a healthy pregnancy and hopw you will have a good time with your newborn and toddler!!
