Is there a long wait to schedule appointments with your OB/midwife?

I finally sorted out my insurance mess and called my OB/GYN to schedule my first appointment since about 6.5 weeks and the earliest appointment they have is a week from now.

There are 8 OB's in the practice so honestly it threw me off a little for there to be a week long wait just for an appointment, especially when it will be going on 8 weeks since my last visit.

Is that a normal wait or should I possibly try to find a different office? I'm a first time mom so I have no idea what's standard in OB/GYN world but I'm totally used to being able to call my primary doctor and have an appointment the same day or next day at the latest so I was definitely expecting earlier than next week. I can't help but be anxious to make sure everything is still progressing well so a week sounds like forever in my pregnancy brain haha.

I don't think a week is bad at all! My clinic schedules a month out. (I happen to know my dr and just text her to fit me in between patients). But yah, a week is nothing :)

  • A week isn't long at all. I had to wait a month and half for my first appointment
  • That definitely makes me feel better then! And hopefully it won't be an issue after this visit since I can just go ahead and schedule my next appointment ahead of time. Haha I'll try not to go crazy for a week!
  • My midwife group is extremely busy and they have always gotten me in same day, including the first time I called for my first OB appointment. The only exception for that is ultrasounds. Unfortunately every practice has different ways of dealing with things and yours may not leave any room in the day to day appointment schedule for same day appointments.

At my last appt the soonest next one they could schedule me was in 4weeks!! My doctors appt is today actually (Yay!) You got in quite early.
  • I had to wait 3 weeks for my first appointment! Now that I'm a patient though, I can easily get same day appointments if needed.

I don't think a week is too bad a wait - hopefully you get all good news at your checkup!
  • With my first appt I called at 6 weeks and didn't get in until 9 weeks. They have been very flexible and can usually see me whenever now. :) I think it's totally normal. Ftm as well so I may be wrong!

I think it can all depend, but a week sounds like no time at all. Depends on how many patients they have, when they do certain things, ultrasound appts., vs ob appts. vs gyn appts, etc. Some offices stagger them. I wouldn't be surprised if they actually fit you in faster than normal since you're due for your 12 week appt. if I want to see my fav OB at the practice I have to schedule her a month out & be very flexible. I know it's hard to wait, but you'll be able to schedule your next appt when you go. Good luck!
  • Yep- mine schedules a month out as well. That's what seems to be the norm here in Los Angeles. After a few sessions, they just asked me if I wanted to schedule all my prenatal visits in advance at once and that made it much easier to get the dates that I wanted.
