Breast milk making LO sick....

I know there is a bf thread, I am hoping this is a side topic and I can get away with a post here. My LO has had a terrible upset stomach (crying, straining, farting etc during every feeding) for at least two weeks. We have been supplementing with formula since he was born because of under supply.

Last week we moved him to formula for Four days exclusively to see if it helped his belly.... It did. He was way more content.

We went exclusively to BF yesterday and this kid is miserable. So we have deduced that there's something in my bf that upsets his stomach.

Anyone with experience with this? Did you find a way to determine. How tomadjautbuour diet so the bf is more palatable? I'm at a loss of who to even consult with? Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: Breast milk making LO sick....

  • Your LO could have an allergy to something you are eating. The only way to really find out is cut out different things until you figure out what is bothering them. Talk to the pediatrician and see what they recommend though as I am not a doctor. That would be my guess tho as to what is going on.

  • Chocolate was giving my LO an upset stomach. I also suspect dairy.
  • I'd also recommend talking to the pedi about probiotic drops. Made a world of difference for my DS. We used a product called BioGaia which we got from behind the counter at the pharmacy (kept in the fridge). It totally sorted out his gut.

  • The fact that he was better on formula does seem to indicate it might be an allergy to something in the breastmilk, but for most women, that is not the case. A lot of moms tend to jump straight to "I have to cut out x food" when that is rarely the issue. The probiotics suggestion is good. I would also suggest finding a chiropractor who works on babies. My son had some pretty bad gas issues, which led to a lot of screaming issues. The chiro was a huge help. Talk to your pedi and check out www.kellymom.com.

    Good luck!

The list the pediatrician gave me of foods to avoid for gas is huge but on it she had dairy, caffeine/chocolate, raw veggies (mainly broccoli), tomato sauce (really anything Italian and Mexican), bananas, legumes, peanuts/peanut butter and several other things. Basically my entire diet. Good luck!

  • Try avoiding wheat and dairy. It's worth it.
