FTM sleeping before the baby comes

I was wondering as a FTM.. Right now I have lost most of any kind of energy that I did have in my second trimester. So I've been sleeping more and just laying around in general more. I know people tell you to get lots of rest now. But my question is,... Is that a good idea? Or should I try to wake up early now n slowly cut back on the hours I sleep now? So i get use to running on less sleep once my baby comes? Maybe if I try to get use to functioning on much less sleep, I won't be so...frazzled, stressed, freaked out etc.

Like I said I'm a FTM and I'm sure this could be a stupid question but I just had to ask and get some input from experienced mommas.

On a side note.. I'm almost 31 weeks and I'm soo excited n anxious, and can't get anything ready till my shower on July 11th. That I've just been trying to sleep to pass the time till the shower n delivery lol..

  • Like PP said...nothing can prepare you! :) Just enjoy the silence and rest for now.

  • @NTHBubs119 i just remember how crazy, out of her mind, exhausted my sister was with my nephew and then got PPDepression really bad. It was so sad and scary to see, I'd really just love to avoid that and most costs. I'm glad to hear that you say after a week(or so) I'll get use to the lack of sleep n crazy times being awake.

Thanks for everyone's responses so far!

  • Don't worry, after 35 weeks you'll be waking up to pee every hour and a half or you might have trouble sleeping in general. That's kind of when your new sleep training begins! Lol

You never know what kind of baby you'll have. Mine loved to sleep and would sleep five hour stretches at night if I would let her as a newborn (but you won't, unless on accident, because they must eat). I slept better once baby was born than I did at the end of pregnancy.

So I would say sleep all you can now, but don't completely lose hope that you'll ever sleep again.
  • Third trimester is notorious for lack of energy, I'm 33 weeks and all I want to do it sleep. Just like with my first child, I'm listening to my body... so sleep and nap away the day is what I'll do lol. Like others have said, depriving yourself of rest now wont help you later... if anything you're just that much more deprived

  • Well first I'll say I'm super jealous that you are able to sleep, I feel like a zombie everyday. No sleep training can prepare you for a newborn so get some rest now while you still can!:)
  • REST while you can!!!  I can't ever get comfortable enough to sleep for long stretches.  soak in every minute until you can't anymore.

  • Get as much rest as you can now! Especially because the 3rd Tri is draining and typically the sleep you are getting is not good sleep. It is completely normal to need more rest around this time.

Also I completely agree with the pp that nothing can prepare you for the newborn stage.

  • If you're able to sleep, sleep! Depriving yourself now is not going to help you later.

35 weeks? This had been my whole pregnancy! Lol ;) oh well I'm used to not sleeping through the night!
  • Rest as much as you can now.  But it won't make a difference when the baby comes...you will still be tired.  You can only stockpile rest and sleep so much.

  • I used to hate when people told me this as a FTM. Then I experienced a newborn.

Yea, there's nothing that can prep you for that. Like PP's stated just relax and rest as much a possible.

Rest! If you have the means to sleep when you feel like it, do it! It's not like you can store rest away, but just enjoy being lazy while you can. The first couple weeks with a newborn are the absolute hardest IMO.
  • You can't store sleep, but the less sleepy you head into this new stage of life, the better off you'll be!

It truly is different for everyone. I loved my sleep, and still do (when not pregnant) but for some reason waking up with a newborn wasn't so bad for me! I was so thrilled just to finally have him there, and it wasn't too long before I learned to feed 1/2 awake. Even though he had to feed every 4 or 5 hours, I'd nap in between feedings with him from 8 at night to 9 or 10 in the morning, so all in all it wasn't too much less sleep that I got before. This time I'll have a toddler running around all day, so it will likely hit me harder. Enjoy it as much as you can, and remember that the days/nights are long, but the weeks are fast. The baby stage is really SO SO short!
