Delivery Options

Hi everyone. FTM. How in the world am i supposed to know all of my options during and after delivery? The only thing I really have heard of is delayed cord clamping, eating the placenta, and circumcision. Does anyone have a site where I can find out all of the stuff I am supposed to be making a decision on? I realize I'm an over-planner and I'm okay with it :)

  • @redfallon (I believe it was her, correct me if I'm mistaken) posted a birth plan checklist that seemed to cover all of the basics. I tried to find it again to post here but didn't have any luck, if you have it easily accessible would you mind posting it again? I found it super helpful and informative!

You also might want to pick up a book. Maybe What to Expect when you're expecting.
You also have options about birthing methods/styles/philosophies. You can look into Hypnobirthing, Bradley Method, etc. because the approach you take to birth may also dictate what is on your checklist and in some cases might steer you to a different hospital/birthing center/home birth. For example, some places offer water births, others will let you labor in water and then prefer you out for delivery. Some places provide yoga balls, others let you bring your own (for laboring).

Seriously, I recommend sitting in the Parenting section of Barnes and Noble for a couple hours and just perusing all the different options out there. The Internet can be helpful but people can also miscommunicate a lot of information and have strong opinions that aren't necessarily supported by facts.

There was a thread awhile back about books on pregnancy. Perhaps you will be able to find it using the search engine? I hope so, because there are a lot of great suggestions on there for various books in addition to What to Expect which many women consider "The Book."

  • Thanks everyone. I realize I can't plan everything and don't want to. I just want to make sure I have the needs covered, such as whether or not to circumcise. The birth plan definitely helps! Thank you. I have What to Expect, but I didn't see what I was looking for. Barnes and Noble, here I come!
  • Theres a printable on here...

I printed it out. & looked things up. Anything I know for sure is a no. I mark off. but for like the pain options, you might need to talk to your OB to see what all your hospital offers. & then discuss anything else from there. Make sure to take notes and take your Printed thing with you. Your OB should have no problem helping you with a Birth Plan, but remember, things do happen and the birth plan is just a guide. If it comes to an emergency, god forbid, the doctor will throw it out the window and do whatever is needed for you and your baby.

Also, you should remember that your doctor may see scores of patients every week. And the L&D nurses you may never meet before delivery. So, in addition to being flexible, you may one to create a one-page summary and/or highlight the things that are most important to you. Your doctor and nurses (especially when there is a shift change) may not have time to read through your six-page list of preferences.
That list is definitely a good starting and reference point though.
  • Read Ina May's Guide to Childbirth!
  • You can also decide where and how you'd like to give birth. You could deliver at home, at a birth center, in a hospital, or some place else. You can labor with as many or as few people around as you like, have as much monitoring as you prefer, and decide what kind of interventions you're happy with. Of course, your baby may need some specific things to be healthy, so it's good to be open-minded. There are so many choices!

PPs have given you good advice/resources.

I would also talk to your doctor to see what they recommend and they can tell you your options/what to expect. Often times, if you take a L&D class at the hospital you plan to deliver at, they will go over your different options.
