Pregnancy vagina

does anybody else notice their vagina more swollen and darker in color ?
Also have a question about episiotomy , is it better to tear or rip naturally? I'm so nervous for my vagina to be ruined !!
Does it go back to normal ??
What does it feel like after you give vaginal birth ?

I had a couple of small tears that required stitching, I promise neither me or my husband notice any differences down there... Lots of initial swelling, yes, but with normal tears, things go back to normal real quick. I would rather have a natural tear than episiotomy. I did however have varicose veins that took a long time to recover from and am feeling discomfort from them already this time around, those didn't pop up till labor last time.

  • Ok I have two vaginal births. My Dr then doesn't believe in episotmy. I had a vaginal massage with both during labor and it helped but I still ripped and had to have stitches. No worries tho it all goes back to normalish after it heals up. The stitches were itchy and I had to do a sitz bath instead of wiping for a week while everything healed. I have never had burning during peeing or sex due to my vaginal births. Your body is designed to do this so dont worry even if your body is quirky your labor and delivery nurse has helped a ton of other mothers deliver and will know how to help your body stay on track. Hope tha helps you
  • Well with my DD I almost needed an epitomity because I was tearing up into my urethra. Luckily, I tore down and had a first degree perineal tear and some stitches. My pelvic floor went to shit and I pissed myself every time I stood for two weeks. Soni wore depends all the time. My vag is normal again and I wear pee myself when I sneeze now.
  • Do u think it matters if I am very small I am a double 0 and have such a tiny frame I don't know how a baby is going to make it past my pelvis lol

No size of baby and mom don't matter much. Things stretch I promise. I had a 10# 14oz kid vaginally and had a 2nd degree tear. Many moms with smaller kids have torn worse. It's position of baby and luck of the draw.
  • I had an episiotomy, and it wasn't bad I required a hand full of stitches. I don't really check out the color of my vag...so I can't help ya there...things have totally gone back to normal, and if you follow the 6 week guideline for no sex and do your kegels you may actually end up being tighter after delivering than before.

The size of your frame does matter. When you get closer to delivery your doctor will more than likely tell you up to what size baby you are physically able to give birth to. If your baby is predicted larger than that recommended size, then the doctor MAY suggest a c-section; however, they usually have you at least attempt vaginally unless you have other pregnancy complications. I could only deliver up to 8 lb baby and had GD. They thought she was hog to be huge and therefore asked if I would prefer a c-section because, chances are, I would have ended up having one anyway.
  • I was one of the lucky few who apparently has an elastic vagina lol no tears no stitches. I was very sore of course but that was about it. Thankfully. Don't worry to much.
  • When I asked my Dr about tearing vs episiotomies. He said I would rather have to stitch one cut vs having many small tears all around your vagina. Thinking about many small tears I was OK with being cut and with a 9 lbs 10 oz baby I did need an eepisiotomy.

Never thought I'd admire an elastic vagina, but man I'm kinda envious @RaisingJulian Haven't spoken with anyone who performs episiotomys any more, I had 4 stitches for tearing after vaginal delivery with my son. Everything healed up just fine. I agree with @thefithuntress reading helped ease fears for me as did birthing videos. Some people get grossed out, but they really helped me in knowing what I could expect next or feeling like however I felt was normal.
  • Ok...I may be taking this a little old school (like before Jenny McCarthy went to crazy town) but... Does "blue twinkies" ring any bells??
  • Look up vaginal steaming or perenium massage. I've had three babies with some stitches but healed nicely and notice no difference. The hospital gives you a squeeze bottle that you fill with warm water to cleanse after you use the bathroom and it feels so much better than having to wipe lol!
  • Hats off! I cant see my vagina anymore. Lol
  • Good to see some tiny mamas here! My mother is also part of the size 00 club and had 6 natural births BUT rather small preemie babies. I assume her lady bits went back to normal. Not many books cater to the petite woman. Although we all have the same organs, its a bit scary picturing an average size baby pushing out of a below average size woman. Im glad to hear im not alone

Also remember that a large component of size is genetic and half of those genes are yours.  If you're small you may also have a small baby.  My ex was 6'1" and hoovered around 300lbs.  Our little girl was 5lb8oz and is still petite like me.  Your body was made to stretch and revert back to normal.  Trust in your body.  You were made to do this and it's a beautiful thing.

I had an incredibly easy birth.  My water broke, I went to the hospital, started having some contractions, but no dilation and got hooked up to a pitocin drip.  Eventually I started having strong contractions, but no significant dilation.  I got an epidural, kicked out all the family who was annoying me, took a nap and woke up when my LO was crowning.  I did a couple of pushes (which felt like the largest bm's ever) and I had a baby girl in my arms.  No rips, no tears.  I did have a massive case of the shakes though.  No one told me that might happen ahead of time.

I understand being scared.  I was worried about tearing my first time.  Out of the many women whose told their birth stories I've never heard one of them say they remember feeling themselves tear.  There's also a discussion from second time moms about

I'm the same size and I did not tear or need stitches with my first.  I honestly can't comment on color changes as I usually don't pay attention to the color of my vag, but there is more blood flow to the area so darkening and swelling should be completely normal.  Kudos to you if you are still flexible enough to check it out yourself without a mirror.  I began having sex again regularly at about 4 weeks after giving birth with my daughter. I didn't hear any complaints about size, shape, color or anything else.  It is recommended that you do not begin having sex again until at least your 6 week checkup with your gynecologist.

Basically the same story.. My ob did an oil massage and helped me stretch right out. No tearing or cutting needed.
Though my sister... She tore from one end to the other. She had stitches and a long recovery. But, in the end.. Her vag still works just as well.
We are having a child come out of a small area. Things will change. It doesn't mean it will be raw ground beef for the rest of your life.
  • Let me start by saying I'm no doctor so this is just passed along info, but my son's pediatrician said that the biological mother's birth weight (I say that as some women are surrogates) is usually an indicator of the baby's size assuming full term for both. She emphasized that this is generally (not always) the case. I am a small woman (5'3" and 108-113lb), but was a 9lb baby. DS came out 9lb. Things stretch... Our bodies were made to do this. I only had a second degree tear with him and women I know with bigger frames and smaller babies had it worse than me.

Perineal massage is supposed to help some with tearing/stretching. It's recommended to start doing it 6 weeks before your due date.
  • It is due to all the increased blood flow. Mine scares me sometimes too
