is it true you can only take a hpt the day you're AF is due? Dh and I only started ttc this month but I keep second guessing symptoms. Just wondering if I took a test today (a week before AF is due) could I get an accurate result?

No, this is not true, but it depends on many factors, including how many days past ovulation (DPO) you are. The only way to know exactly when you ovulated is by temping. Everything else is a guess. Some people start testing at around 9 DPO. Unfortunately, your body doesn't read a calendar, so saying you're a week away from AF may not necessarily be true. If you think your symptoms may be from pregnancy, then take a test.

If you are indeed a week away from AF (kinda a guess at this point) you can test but it would come up negative. It's likely that implantation, which causes the hormone you're testing for, hasn't happened yet. Or at best has just happened. If I were you I'd start testing at 2 or 3 days prior to AF, with the anticipation of a BFN. But that's only because I like POAS. Lurk this forum and absorb as much as you can in the meantime, because the information is life changing and you'll be far better informed for next month. There's even a chart somewhere about the percentage chance of a pos test for each DPO.
Basic biology lesson. At 14 days PROIR to your next period (this number is an average. It can be different from person to person, but it is pretty much the same for that women. ) if fertilization occurs, the zygote floats down to the uterus. Ovulation is considered week 2 day 0 (even if you ovulated on week 9. It is done this way for pregnancy timing). The zygote will implant about 7-9 days after fertilization. So week 3 day 1 to day 3. It takes the implanted embryo about three days after implantation to produce enough HcG to turn a pregnancy test positive. Which puts you right around 4 weeks 0 days. Or when you would expect your next period.
You can not have 'pregnancy ' symptoms prior to implantation. The embryo does not produce HcG then.
I was charting, and I knew exactly when ovulation occured. My first positive HPT was evening 13 dpo ( days post ovulation ) and am of 9 dpo.
You can test, but it be negative. Unless you ovulated really early. That is possible bit it does not happen a lot.
I got a + at 9 DPO, so a few days before I missed my period, but I was charting and knew when I ovulated and that I could test that early without "wasting" a test. The reason the directions say the day before your missed period is because the majority of women do not understand the basics of how ovulation and cycles work, much less temping and charting, so the directions are for the common denominators out there.
I'm totally confused on my symptoms right now.... had a "tri phase" temp shift this month, temp has stayed high, my boobs are full and heavy, and today is day 35 of my cycle (normal for me is 32).... negative test again this morning. ?!?
My chart this month was a total mess, AND I had fertile CM multiple times this month a couple days apart. No idea what is going on.

Triphasic chart does not always mean pregnancy. Also, cycle length means nothing, how many DPO are you? What is your normal LP?

If the answer is no its really hard to know when to test.
If you would like to learn more about your body read taking charge of your fertility by Toni Weschler and begin charting.
