Winter babies

What are some baby items that are must have for winter babies?
When do stores start putting out winter clothes for babies?
As a FTM this has been on my mind while I look around Target and find super cute stuff, I am slow to buy anything in NB or 0-3 months because when my baby is in that size it will be cold. I live in Texas so we don't see much snow but it gets pretty cold.
Any STMs have anything you must have for a November/winter baby?

I loved outfits like these for my son. The newborn and 0-3 month sizes usually have the built in feet and you can layer with a long sleeve onesie underneath.
  • I live in New England, much colder than Texas, and I did not buy anything special for winter with my first in the newborn stage.
Like with any newborn, cover their head and feet (socks will do) and two to three layers of regular clothing and a blanket should do for your neck of the woods.

Also for everyone who may read this puffy & heavy jackets are a big no-no in car seats. It restricts the straps from getting a proper snug fit making it unsafe.

  • I suggest getting tons of zip up sleepers especially the fleece kind. As @rbradshaw77 said the jackets are more of a pita than they help. Blankets are much easier and you can tuck around baby. Beanies are great too to keep head and ears warm. If it's really cold put a layer under the sleeper and socks on feet under so they can't pull them off. I am not sure how to handle colder winters like the north. But these are tips for southern winters.
  • We get pretty cold winters where I live and my son was born in February.  I had one of those warm snuggly bear outfits that I loved when I had him in the carrier (we walk a lot of places around here).  It had feet, hands and a hood so he was completely covered in one easy piece (rather than a jacket, shoes, etc.)

Additionally, I agree with PP about the fleece zip-up jammies and I loved the outfits that @rbradshaw77 mentioned.
  • My first was born in March in the south so I didn't get to go through winter with her until she was 9 months.  She refused to wear hats.  This little one will have so many little beanies and hoodies with ears on them and she won't be able to take them off!  I can't wait.

Pretty much the same; just might need a thicker blanket. :)

I did have one of those car seat cuddle bag things, but I haven't needed it with every baby. Winter was mild enough with my firstborn that we used a footed sleeper or a long-sleeved onesie with pants and a very light sweater/jacket and a hat under a receiving blanket and a fleece blanket for her first winter. (She was a Sept baby, so she was not quite 3 months old when winter arrived.) DS's first winter was much harsher, so I used the cuddle bag whenever it was really cold and/or windy. (It seemed to be one or the other every time we went out!) He stayed nice and cozy with that, and didn't seem to need any extra layers.

P.S. I live in Canada in case anyone was wondering. :)

  • My daughter was born in January, I had lots of sleeper sacks, hats and socks. Always made sure to keep the heat on in the house and  when going out during the day I always covered her carseat with a blanket until we got into the car.

None of us were thinking about that during August when we were buying all these adorable outfits and onesies that were obviously for summer! Whoops!

  • I've been looking in clearance section for NB & 0-3M clothes because I've noticed they have a good selection of the baby winter clothes there. I just recently went to Kohl's and they had so many cute NB & 0-3M clothes for like $5 since it was mostly winter.

Yes! I love the hats with ears! My poor little girl may think she's part bear :).

It is tough to find winter things this time of year but sometimes you can find some great things at consignment stores since most people aren't thinking about cold weather right now.
  • In the swampy south right now, but fam is in Massachusetts so we travel up there a lot, especially during winter holidays.  One thing I loved that I haven't seen mentioned is Aquaphor gel.  It'r really gentle and great for protecting from wind/cold burn on little cheeks.  I keep bottles stashed everywhere now (love it for myself too, it's one of those products with a million uses).
  • Where I live most days in winter range from -10 to -40 so we bundle bundle bundle! Always a sleeper with attached feet as to not get a draft. Always a touqe. Blanket and car seat cover.

  • In Texas you won't need too much. I'm in Houston and DD was born in December. Get lightweight muslin blankets that will last all year and just one warmer blanket. Longsleeved onsies and shirts with pants, socks and little hats or sleepers with feet are really all you'll need.
  • I live in the foothills of the cascades and we frequently are up in the mountains playing in the snow. Additionally, my in-laws live in the high desert where it's very cold in the winters. My first LO was a december baby and I loved this car seat cover.

  • I saw a lot of people mentioning buying NB outfits, from my experience I would not bother. We got a bunch at the baby shower and DS was a 9 lbs baby so he never fit in them. Even a normal size baby will only wear them for a very short period of time.

For cold weather, fleece sleep sacks/swaddlers and the footed fleece one piece zip ups. DS was born in October and lived in those one pieces all winter. And I think it may of been assumed but an infant car seat instead of going straight to the convertable.

My son was in newborn for 8 weeks even though he was born 6lbs13oz. He was super long and skinny. No one bought us newborn because they assumed he wouldn't wear them long so I had to mad rush to the store and buy him clothes. This time I'm mostly buying 0-3 new and buying a bunch of newborn used.

Good point. Every LO is different. DS was only in 0-3 for a month.

I consider amazon prime a must have now, to avoid those "omg I forgot" trips to the store. Or if you just don't have time to go to the store
