Birth control experience/suggestions

So I had the 6wk PP check up today and the big topic of birth control was asked. I asked doc what he recommended & he wasn't very helpful...just told me all the options I have since I'm breastfeeding.  So I decided to give the shot a try. What are some the other mom's experience with getting the Depo shot? Did you like it, have  any side effects with it, etc.? Which birth control option would you suggest?  I really want to get my tubes tied because this baby was a total accident/surprise and I don't want to have another such surprise, plus me & my hubby can't afford another one. But this wasn't discussed before I had baby so I didn't get it done then, so I'll have to wait awhile before I can get it done now. So yeah anyway suggestions on forms of birth control, your experience/opinion on the Depo shot, and thoughts on getting tubes tied.

Re: Birth control experience/suggestions

  • DH will be getting a vasectomy. I too considered a tubal but ultimately decided against it. I've taken the mini-pill in the past, but I'm not good at remembering to take it at the same time each day.

  • I had two Mirena IUDs previously and plan on getting one again. But I'm scared of the insertion this time around because I still feel so sensitive down there!
  • No experience with the shot, but I started on the Pill again, Alesse, and I'm EBFing. My OB said that it's more effective the the mini pill and since I have no issues with low supply that I should be fine on the normal pill. DH is also getting a vasectomy but it's a 4 month wait right now.
  • I was on the shot before having my LO. I loved it. I didn't have a period for three years. It is very effective in preventing pregnancy. The only down fall was it took a year and a half to get pregnant. Since you're not wanting another baby, the shot is perfect for you. I'm going with an IUD because I want another baby. Just not right now.
  • @Curlygirl84 I was sensitive during my cervix check at the doctor so I was really worried about having my mirena inserted. My doctor had me take one ibuprofen an hour before going in. I had no pain during insertion.
  • I was on the shot after my first (14 years ago)... Really loved it. No side effects, no period. I was a young mother and went from doctor to doctor so without continuity of care, I was on it way too long (10 years) and I think it is known to cause bone problems if you're on it beyond 3 years. Other than that, totally wonderful. Nothing to remember except and appt ever 12 weeks. I plan to ask about it tomorrow (we're 7 weeks PP) because I wasn't excited about any of the other options.
  • I just had my tubes tied with this last c-section - I have 3 kids and I'm 40, so I'm certain I don't want more kids. I don't know how old you are, but that would be a factor on such a permanent decision.

  • Just had the nexplanon implanted this morning. Lasts up to 3 years. My Dr will not do the iud. Just had a baby 6 weeks ago that was 10 weeks early. We don't want any more kids due to the chance of having another preemie. Hopefully this helps. It did hurt getting it put in & it's a little sore now but it's worth a shot! The depo made me gain tons of weight.
  • I had the Mirena IUD placed last week. I took ibuprofen about an hour beforehand. For me, the procedure was painful and uncomfortable (I had a cesarian (not sure if that makes a difference)). However, the procedure took less than 5 minutes and the discomfort ended once it was over. I had some minor cramping and spotting for a day or so afterwards. Overall, I'm glad I went with this form of birth control.

Just an FYI with the shot, it can cause osteoporosis so be aware and maybe don't use it for a long term plan
  • I am looking for an alternative to the pill. It took me so long to get my cycle evened out while we were trying to get pregnant, plus I started not to like the person I was while I was taking it. For some reason, I just felt so much better once I was off of it. I don't think the alternatives are much better, unfortunately. Hubby says we can just go the condom route. Bleh.
  • I went back after my 6 week checkup to have my tubes tied. My doctor wouldn't do it after the delivery for some reason.

I didn't like the pill either because I felt like it was making me crazy. I went off of it and DH and I used condoms which kinda sucked but we got used to it, so it worked for us. There are other non-hormonal options so talk to your doc.

My doctor recommended the Spectra to me. It's a smaller IUD that lasts for 3 years. I haven't gotten it yet, but I decided to get it because I know I won't remember a pill. The only birth control I've ever been on is the Nuva Ring and I hated it.
