Thoughts on cloth diapering?

So this is my first child and I have heard a lot about cloth diapering and its benefits. I know it is a lot cheaper, more environment friendly, and supposed to be better for the baby due to the lack of chemicals in the diapers in which most every other country has been banned. It all sounds wonderful but it also sounds tricky? Just wondering if any other moms out there have cloth diapered before?? If so, thoughts/suggestions?

Re: Thoughts on cloth diapering?

  • We CD'd our daughter. They are fantastic and I love them, but it depends on your daycare/babysitter if they will tolerate dealing with them.
Cottonbabies.com is where we got all of our diapers and covers from, and they have a great "101" section that teaches all about them.
Personally, I wanted the simplest things to deal with (there are a ton of brands and systems out there), so we just went with prefolds, snappis, and one-size expandable covers. They fit her from newborn to potty trained, although we did have to get bigger prefolds as she grew.
    Good luck!

  • I cloth diapered my now 2.5 yr old. It was a great choice for my family. I am a very busy working mom, and still found time to handle the wash routine. Will definitely be doing it with the next one! It takes some working out the kinks- finding the ones you like best, and finding a good wash routine. But we thought it was by far worth it! I did a lot of online research and also went to a local organic baby store that answered lots of questions for me and helped me set up my system and choose the style I liked best. Let me know if you have more questions!

  • Thank you! My biggest concerns are how to wash them? I know they can go right in the washer but what about poopy diapers? Are you doing cycles of diapers daily? How do you get it so it doesn't stink up the house? And what if you're going somewhere for the day? Do you hang on to the diaper all day? I want to give it a try but these are the things I worry I'll struggle with.

I CD my son and loved it. I plan on CD this LO too. With my first we bought newborn sized diapers and one size diapers. Once he outgrew the newborns we sold them so for this one we just need to buy more newborn size ones. The hardest part for me was finding the best wash routine but once you get it you're good! Also, I've found more resources so it's easier to find the solutions to any problems you might run into!

For this one we plan on using Newborn: Green Mountain Diapers (GMD) Workhorse, & GMD prefolds, with Snappis (instead of pins), & Thirsties Duo Wrap covers. For one size diapers we have: Fuzzibunz, BumGenius, a few gDiapers, and some BestBottoms. We also have some red GMD prefolds and Thirsties covers.

  • @MollyA1011 I'm still deciding on this myself, but my sister cloth diapered her first. If she knew they were going to be out all day they used disposable diapers. (Natural, chemical free ones still.)
  • I'm planning on doing it with my first, we've chosen the bum genius free time all in one. The absorbent flaps are already sewn in although you can add extra if you want more absorbency. You just put the whole thing in the wash and they supposedly line dry quickly. They sell them at buy buy baby so they're available at major retailers. We plan on doing a bulk purchase around Black Friday from whoever offers the best deal. We will likely wash every other day.
  • I CD my 14 month old and will continue to do it with LO. I love it. Honestly, I would hate to have to go out and buy diapers. I know you could do it when you're grocery shopping but I can be forgetful. I like being able to just throw them in the wash and not have to leave my house.

If your baby is breastfed, the poop is water soluble and can go directly in the wash. (I'm not sure about formula-fed poo...) Once food is introduced, the poopy diapers need to be rinsed. We bought a spray that attaches to our toilet and if we're lucky, the poop just plops right out of the diaper into the toilet without much mess. As for the dirty diapers when I'm out, I have a wet bag to put my diapers in. Keeps the wetness and smell in. I've never used disposables when out. Even not while on mini vacations (a few days)!

I have 24 diapers. That is enough to get me through 2-3 days now. You don't really want to go more than 3 days without washing. 2 is optimal. I use the bumGenius 4.0 with snaps. I have been noticing just recently that the elastic on the thighs are a little stretched out. It can be a little tricky to get the fit just right and like a PP said, your wash routine will be tricky at first and you will try many things until something works for you!

But in all honesty, I love CD! Like everything else, it becomes a part of your routine.

Sorry for the long winded answer. Hope it helps!

Oh and the bumGenius diapers that are not AIOs, you can use the shell (without the liner) as a swim diaper! Bonus!

@ChipMonster did you do newborn as well? If so do you remember how many you needed? I can't remember how many newborn diapers I need!

  • For newborn I just plan on using disposables. Until the stump falls off.
  • @SullyN although I had a hefty 9lb baby, the BG didn't fit him right away. I used disposables but had him in cloth by 2 weeks. I didn't have to buy any diapers, I got some at my baby shower. I still have some leftover from DS for this one!
  • SullyNSullyN member
We gave away all left over disposables to friends and we never really used them anyways. We used Kissaluv size 0 from a week or two old for at least a few months. But that was 4 years ago and I know things have changed!

  • I planned on doing it and bought a huge stash. It didn't work out for us, though. It's hard to find caregivers in our area who will CD, so it was an issue whe I went back to work at 3 months. I ended up selling everything for only a slight loss. Honestly, I didn't miss it one bit when we had our first bout of diarrhea. I'm super green in most areas of life, but it was nice to wrap those diapers up and toss them! (Sorry environment!)

We washed every other day no matter how many were in the pail, unless it was too full, then they were washed sooner. We used an Ubbi stainless steel pail with their reusable fabric bags. Easy to just up-end the bag into the washer, turn it inside out and put it in too.
You don't have to rinse the poo out once baby starts on solids; we used a scraper to clean DD's out. For the most part it worked pretty well, especially after her poos started getting more solid. But they do need to be cleaned out once they're no longer exclusively breastfed.
Eta we waited until DD had passed all the meconium before we used the CDs. Before that we used the pack of disposables the hospital gave us.

Cold rinse cycle, then hot wash cycle, then hot dryer cycle. If you want to strip them (remove built up residue from detergent etc) there are a few different methods. The best one for us was to use blue dawn dish soap instead of detergent for the wash cycle, then do an additional rinse cycle afterward.
    Poopies have been answered above.
When they're newborn and depending on how many you have, you may sometimes have to do daily washings. Newborns use 12-16 diapers/day.
Use a diaper pail or wet bag to contain odors.
You can use a wet bag for day trips out to catch your dirty diapers/wipes.

Oh and for wet bags I loved the Fuzzibunz hanging wet bag (at least when DS was a toddler). It has a zipper at the bottom so you just toss the wet bag in the washer, and unzip the bottom. Then all the diapers come out of the bag during the washing!

  • We cloth diaper our son & will CD this baby too once he/she fits in cloth. We use all Bumgenius 4.0 pocket diapers and wash every 3 days. We have an HE front loading washer & they work better when full. We wash with Tide powder, quick wash, long hot wash, high dryer. We have the hose attachment to spray off any poop that doesn't just plop off.

We did CD with my son. It wasn't a big deal, didn't take much time and I enjoyed how little (overall) we spent on diapers.

  • We CDed our first set of twins from about 1 mo until they PTd. We plan to again.  We might be moving daycares so I'm not positive if it'll be FT or not again, but that's my intention.

  • Everyone else pretty much responded with what I would say but just wanted to add we love our cloth. We use mostly best bottoms. There was another thread with more good info a few weeks back. Search cloth at the bottom. :)

  • We cloth diaper our 21 month old and have from day 1. We had to do half cloth half disposable as a newborn because he was teeny and we didn't have enough newborn cloth diapers.

Exclusively breastfed poop is water soluble. Formula fed or solids-fed needs to be sprayed or scraped. I just save them up in a wetbag till the end of the day and spray them and toss them in an open pail after my son goes to sleep.

Wash the diapers every couple to 3 days. The wash routine can be a little tricky at first, but once you find a routine that works for you, you're golden.

I'd definitely consider it, especially if you're considering having future children. You save $ with one child in cloth. Subsequent children in cloth equals even more savings.

I have lots of different brands and styles. I'm also a very busy working mom whose child is in daycare full time. The all in ones are the most expensive, but the easiest. All in twos and pockets are middle of the line for price and don't require a ton of extra work. Just a little more time to fold. Covers and prefolds/flats/inserts are the cheapest but are hardest for daycare. I used them a lot when I was home on maternity leave and I still use them for overnights because you can stuff those suckers like crazy for extra absorbency.

My all time favorite brands are
    Tots Bots
    Bumgenius
    Grovia
    Rock-A-Bums
  • I cloth diapered my last three and will with this one. The ladies above did a great job of mentioning about everything so I won't go on but I do second green mountain diapers as far as price. Diaper swapers is also a great resource. I suggested this in another thread but I think we should start a diaper stash thread. I would love to see what you other moms are using and buying.

This will be my first time cloth diapering but after some research I like the softbums brand. I'll definitely be looking up some of the brands mentioned here though!
  • We plan on using cloth with this little one. I am a FTM and have been reading about cloth ever since my first pregnancy, which ended early. It has taken some doing, but DH is on board, AT LAST! I can't wait to start buying some fluff!!

  • I am really interested in learning more about CD. (I am a FTM.) The only thing that I am wondering about is if the amount of money spent on laundry detergent offsets the savings from the diapers at all. How many more loads of laundry do you typically have to do? But I am definitely going to check out some of the websites mentioned above. DH didn't seem too interested in CD when I mentioned it, but I've got a while to convince him ;)

The instructions for soft bums says half a cap with cold water then a second cycle with no detergent on hot. Doesn't seem like much detergent is needed because you don't want a buildup.
  • Like a PP said, I use tide powder. And a generous scoop. This goes against most recommendations however I was using a small amount of recommended detergent and I was having issues with stink and eventually ammonia build up which is absolutely awful. I found an article about how those washing formulas (small amount) is more old fashioned and that we are washing pee and poop so we should be using a lot of detergent... The recommended amount for the brand. I made the switch to tide a few months ago and have had no problem with build up, stink or ammonia. So that's what works for me.

Agree. Also use tide and plenty of it.

With a newborn I would do a load every other day but now at 2 I can get by with every 3 or 4 days. Most of the time I add in my kitchen towels and rags and sometimes will add in bath towels if I need a bigger load.
So I don't feel like it's that much more laundry.

Also not sure if cloth wipes were mentioned but I LOVE cloth wipes. I sewed 3 or 4 dozen 2 years ago and still holding strong. Just flannel and some with terry cloth. I can use 2 or 3 cloth wipes on a big poopy diaper as opposed to 5 or more regular wipes. I feel like the savings alone for wipes as been worth it.

One of fav thing about cloth is the resale value. I've bought almost all my diapers used or on sale and will resell them when finished.
Last baby we thought we were done so I sold my newborn diapers for almost what I paid for them. So I essentially diapered my newborn for close to nothing!

  • Ok question to all who have clothe diapered- what if you don't have a washing machine?

I have to hand wash all my clothes and will be doing the same with the cloth diapers. I have hired someone to do this as it is impossible to get it all done myself and will be double impossible once babies are here.

But care wise what problems could you see by hand washing? For example @ChipMonster do you think ammonia build up would be a problem? Also the water won't be super hot for hand washing but would you think we would have to do a hot water soak first and then hand wash?

I have never done this but it's really my only option as I can occasionally find disposables locally but it's not constantly available and also mega expensive. I'm actually a little nervous about it being gross to deal with!

I'm also thinking about humidity.. Any one else live somewhere humid .. Do you think it will add to the stink?

Also how many would you think I would need? I will have a new born but also 4 months later bring home an 18 month old toddler through adoption.. So how many per child? Would you buy extra because of the hand washing because it might be every two days washing and then need to dry! Sorry for so many questions but would love some advice so I can better plan ahead!
  • @somewhereinafrica
I can't answer all the questions but with washing without a machine, I have read that the diapers can be boiled in a pot of water on the stove to disinfect them. I'd probably do a cold rinse first to try to remove as much of the waste from them as possible, then a warm soap wash, then boil and hang dry.
A good diaper pail should hold in the odors from diapers collected in it. You just want to be sure it is dried out completely before putting more in. We had an issue with condensation build-up in our pail during the summer months.
I would think for a newborn, you'll want around 40 diapers. That'll give you a couple days between washings (using the estimate that newborns use 12-16 diapers each day).
When DD was 18 mos we had started potty training so she was only using 4-6 diapers per day. Any idea whether your 18 mo old has had any toilet training at all? If none, the. Probably plan on 8-10/day, so a good stash there would be about 30.
Plus covers for them, we had 7 or 8 for DD. we used the Flip brand one size expandable covers. They get washed the same as diapers but hang dry only.
  • Agree with @ChipMonster & @mollyj931 about Tide powder, it's amazing! It's what we use and I use a full scoop. You're washing pee & poop out of diapers, don't be afraid to be heavy handed with detergent. Also, if you have a regular top loading machine you can use less expensive non-HE detergents. They work great. We also use cloth wipes. It's so easy to use cloth wipes when CDing. I don't see, so I bought some on etsy and I just through them in the laundry with the diapers.

  • I use cloth wipes too but just bought a few packs of small face cloths at babies r us. They work great. I only use disposable wipes if I don't have access to water (like at a park).
  • @somewhereinafrica I'm really sorry, I don't know anything about hand washing the diapers. I think that I have also heard about the boiling water technique. As for the ammonia build up, as long as you are washing your diapers frequently and with a good detergent, you shouldn't have any ammonia build up. I wouldn't go more than 3 days without washing.
Also, I have 24 diapers with a newborn and that was ok for a wash every other day. I will also have a 21 month old by the time LO is born so I may have to invest in a few more diapers, still not sure.
  • If you have to hand wash I really recommend this https://www.laundry-alternative.com/our-products/the-wonderwash/
We use a small electric version that sits on our counter, we have done all of our laundry in it except for large blankets for months, with a spin dryer we have done just fine. This uses no electric at all, just hand crank and it's quick. You do as many rinses as you want, use whatever water temp you want, and your hands stay clean. They're out of stock right now but if you google around you may be able to find it somewhere else.
