Breastfeeding

Please help!! Breast milk supply is decreasing and my twins girls are 5&1/2 months old!

I have been breasteeding my twin girls and have had no problems until recently. I started feeding solids about a month ago and since then my supply has dwindled down. I'm desperately looking for solutions bec I'd like to continue to breastfeed for as long as possible. My Dr had suggested I feed them solids and THEN offer breast which led to them nursing less. After noticing the decrease, I did some research and started following the advice I picked up which was to nurse FIRST & then feed the solids. I've done this for the past few days and seems to be ok. They both still eat the solids even after they nurse. I STILL don't seem to have enough supply to nurse them at bedtime. They are very fussy and definitely are not getting enough. I've supplemented with formula for those nights but I really would much rather be feeding them breast milk. What can I do to increase my supply?? Any advice is appreciated!!

You can take supplements like fenugreek and blessed thistle. Kellymom has info on dosing. Also maybe you could see an IBCLC or even a support group so you can do a weighted feed to see how much they are getting. We didn't start solids until 6 plus months.

  • Thank you! My Dr gave me the impression I needed to start at 4 months. I can't change it now but I know for next time
  • I'm so sorry to read this :( decreased milk supply is the most frustrating thing I've dealt with ever. It's just stressful. Anyway, here's some helpful tips: try mother's milk tea. It's not delicious, but it should help. Also visit the website www.thebreastcookieever.com for lactation cookies! They will help you! The website has a FAQ link as well! I hope you continue on your breastfeeding journey! And congratulations on your new little ones!

The best thing you can do is put your girls to the breast more often. Even if they aren't getting as much, they should trigger your body to start producing more. Also every time you give them formula, pump for a few minutes on each side. I get that they need the formula, but this solves one problem while exacerbating the other. Try an extra pumping session in the morning, too.

ETA: I would actually be careful of the mothers milk tea, just stick to fenugreek and cookies. I have heard (never experienced first hand, this is all hearsay) that it can actually lead to a decrease in supply rather than the opposite.
