So aggravated thyroid related

so I have thyroid issues. Always have. I asked the doctors 6 weeks ago to take my blood to check my levels and they said we will do it at your next appointment which ended up being more more weeks away. Doctor just called and said my levels are so low, at a 16 and they have to switch my meds, which is fine. Anything for baby to be healthy. I'm pissed because they could have found this out sooner. She said baby can become hypothyroid or even have abnormalities because of this. Wtf!! They should have checked it sooner! I told them to and last pregnancy they checked it all the time. So now I'm sad and worried.

Re: So aggravated thyroid related

  • If you have known thyroid issues, they (or your endo) should be checking you monthly. Pregnancy can make your tsh jump around.

This is why I have my endocrinologist handle my thyroid stuff. OB, though well meaning, are not really qualified to treat it. I have my thyroid labs drawn every 4-6 weeks.
The good news is baby should have been functioning off his/her own thyroid since 13 weeks, hopefully you have no long term issues.

Very true ladies. Last oreganancy they were so on top of it.
  • Question for you ladies with thyroid issues, are yours just function related, or have you had cysts?

And it sucks when they don't listen to valid concerns.

I have hashimotos so I have essentially no thyroid funtion.
Do you mean thyroid nodules? I have had a couple thyroid us, but they have never seen nodules.

  • Yes nodules. I wondered if the two were related (function and nodules) as I don't personally know anyone who has function issues. I have a few that are growing unfortunately, but my blood work hasn't shown any issue with function so far. And I can't see a specialist until they've grown slightly larger. Plus my normal doc answers everything with "eh, maybe". So it's watch and wait.

@pink*sheep I had mine removed because it became toxic (overactive) with nodules after having Hashimotos. My dad had thyroid cancer when he was young so I was pretty happy to have it removed instead of having radioactive iodine to kill it.

  • I have two large nodules on either side. I recently had a biopsy on them and they are not cancerous so as long as they don't grow they will still in there! I have had hypothyroidism for 10 years or so, it did get worse with pregnancy but seems ok since the first trimester. Definitely see a specialist, do not rely on your ob, you should be checked every 4 to 6 weeks
  • I have hypothyroidism and hashimotos. Thankfully, no nodules yet. I get mine checked every 6 months when not pregnant by a specialist and every month while pregnant by my ob.

  • They check mine monthly. And every time they check it, they up my dosage. Before pregnancy, I was on .137 .... I'm 21 weeks pregnant & am now on .200 .... It just keeps going up. This is my 4th pregnancy. They didn't test with my 1st child & she's 100% healthy & has no thyroid issue to date. I'm sure the baby will be fine. I've researched it in the past. It can slow the growth of baby if not controlled. Is baby measuring on scale?
  • Yeah so far, everything with baby is great. I brought my thyroid stuff to my last ob appt (last month) and they didn't seem too concerned. I haven't had blood work since my nt and before that it was just the initial profile. Thanks for all the info ladies!
  • I'm glad there's a thread on this! I have a question. Pre-pregnancy I was on 75 mcg, they up'ed my dose to 100mcg when I found out I was pregnant. My TSH during first tri was 0.34. They just checked me again yesterday (22weeks) and TSH is now 1.5. They are not changing my dose and will just check again in 3rd trimester. I've only been on synthroid since last year, so I'm not super familiar with how they typically manage it. Would any of you be concerned with that jump? Or that they don't want to check again until 3rd tri?

Your level is in a good range, however I would push for additional screening. I get my TSH checked every 4-6 weeks, that seems to be the norm for most women here.
