3rd Trimester

Circumcision

hey moms- did you circumcise your son? If so- at what age? Did they use anaesthetic? How was the after care? Was your baby okay?

For all three boys (DS3 born today): nope.
  • Loading the player...
  • Warning: This will be a touchy subject for some.
When I had ds we initially did not circ.
We cleaned as we were told, we were meticulous about dirty diapers and at about 2 months he came down with a urinary tract infection, bladder infection, kidney infection and testicular infection which landed him in the hospital for three days. One of the scariest moments of my life.
I am not saying this is because he was uncircumcised but know that uncircumcised penises are more prone to infection.
While in the hospital the urologist recommended circumcision but at that age she only did circumcisions with the use of general anesthesia and she wouldn't put him under until he was 6mos old.
We had the circumcision done and he didn't seem to be in pain afterwards however we were very adamant about making sure he was medicated for those first couple days.
If I were to have another boy I would circ as soon as possible just to avoid anything that occurred with our first.
  • Yes with DS1 and Yes when DS2 gets here as well. The pediatrician did in office a few days after we got home. Some people can have it done in the hospital. After care was very easy. Keep it very clean and vaseline on the diaper.
  • The AAP says that circumcision may be beneficial, however they do not 'endorse ' it. What is right for my family may not be right for you.

Ask your provider who does it and when? Then ask them the normal process for it. Each facility is different. What my hospital does can be very different from yours.

And yes, most do use some sort of numbing meds.
    Thank God for Raid.

With my first son, I was not going to because I had no real reason to. But as luck would have it, at 29 days old he got a UTI with urosepsis. They said it might have been because bacteria (possibly from poop) sneaked in through the foreskin somehow. Long story short, when he was discharged from the hospital I took him to get circumcised. I regret not having done it sooner and I'm happy I did it.

I'm having another boy now and I definitely plan to circumcise him. The sooner, the better.

  • We chose not to.
  • I didn't circumsize my first son, for the sole reason he had a lot going on. He needed surgery at 1 week old due to a cyst on his vocal cords. I'm having another boy and I'm wanting to circumsize him, just curious as to when they get older if they would discuss it.... Hmm
  • Every male in my family is circumsized. I know it's a highly debated topic but if I ever have a boy I'd have him circumsized unless my husband said no since he has the "equipment" and would know about it more than I would
  • I have no religious affiliation about circumcision. My decision to circumcise was based only on my husband. I want all my boys to match!
Haha sounds weird when I type it out but it's true.

No, we didn't w our first two sons. I'm having our 3rd boy in Aug and he won't be circumcised either.
    DS1 - Feb 2008

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • We did for both of my sons.  My husband is not circumcised.  He to this day wished his mom had it done when he was born but the appt. was canceled and she never rescheduled it.  This is why he felt so strongly about having it done with them. Both of mine (13 and 4 now) had it done right after they were born in the hospital and healed up great.
  • We're team green, but we will not circumcise if our baby is a boy. There are many reasons why we're opposed to it, but I don't really feel like getting into the discussion again (it's been discussed a lot on BMB). I'd just recommend you research the pros and cons carefully. Best wishes!
  • We did, after researching, because the pros and cons basically weighed evenly (IMO), but MY was pretty adamant about circ'ing any boys we had (for both religious and cultural reasons). They did use a topical numbing agent, no issues with after care, no issues 3y later, either.

  • I have 3 boys none of which are circumsized. No problems at all. Two are grown men.
  • I am due in August, and though my husband is circumcised, we are planning not to circumcise our son.  :)
  • I wish I hadn't. For the first 15 months of my DS's life we had to rip apart adhesions and keep vasoline on it constantly. Once he started having regular night time erections the problem went away but poor guy had it rough for more than a year. I really hope it hasn't left him with any permanent nerve or sensitivity damage.
