3D/4D ultrasound

I am thinking about getting a 3D/4D ultrasound, but not sure if it's really worth it or not. What are your thoughts on it...

Re: 3D/4D ultrasound

  • I have always been curious: what's the 4th dimension that the 4D refers to?
  • My sister tried to do one with hers, but she had anterior placenta and they couldn't see him very well. When I did my scan they told me since I have AP too we probably wouldn't be able to get a good view. Just throwing that out there. I think they're pretty cool, myself. If I knew we'd be able to get a good view we'd do it.
  • @Telebell the image is in 3D, but 4D means you are watching the 3D image in "real time"..... if you know what I mean! :-)

Here's my sons 3D shot sucking his thumb (: ! This was at 18w2d !
  • Is the 3d or 4D ultrasound same as anatomy scan??
  • I'm also on the fence about it. My doctor's office offers it for $125 and recommends doing it between 26-28 weeks for the best views. We would be doing it solely for a chance to see baby again. Otherwise, there are no more peeks at baby unless there's a complication, which we definitely don't want.

I personally wouldn't trust anyone other than my OB's office to do the ultrasound. Even then, I'm not sure it's worth it. I can feel her kicks and hear her heartbeat at every appointment. Leaving the facial features until birth wouldn't be the end of the world, and the three ultrasounds I've had this pregnancy are more than the zero my mom got when she was pregnant :)
  • @caffienatkat that is awful:(
  • 3d pics are just that a 3 dimension picture a 4d is a real time high definition picture and a sonogram is a 2d reg black and white flat image @ealfornon

We paid for our 3D ultrasound to find out the sex of our baby. They won't tell us during the anatomy scan here. Our anatomy scans are done in 2D which is the black and white image.
  • The 4D is just a "live" shot of a 3D video. The 3D is a still picture

I don't think it's worth it to pay extra for. We got both at our anatomy scan and I would have been ok without it. It's cool but not necessary in my opinion. Unless you are having multiples or something where it would really make a difference.

I've been looking into these boutique places that offer ultrasounds for entertainment purposes and would warn a friend against going for multiple reasons, so I'll offer you what I've found.
First, effects of extended exposure are not known. The technology can cause warming in the amniotic fluid resulting in bubbling. Second, and I think very significantly, the shops are unregulated. The machines used are not required to be up to date or meet any guidelines and the people operating them are often not licensed or certified.
In many states these shops have been shut down or outlawed after cases shed light on the potential risks.
I see many people on here say they wouldn't eat a soft boiled egg or take a sip of beer for fear of harming their baby, but these types of places (I believe) provide a false sense of security in the way they mimic health professionals' offices. Like any business their goal is profit, which may or may not come at the expense of safety and cutting corners.
  • I had one at my 20 wk anatomy scan, she was too nuzzled up and couldn't get a good one though. She doesn't like her picture taken, just like mommy..lol it would be pretty cool to get if you could get baby to cooperate,
  • I had my 3d photos done at 16 weeks to find out the sex early, it was incredible. The sonographer at my normal hospital owns a private practice too so I 100% trusted her. She did my 8,12 and 20 week scans at the hospital included by the NHS and she did my 16 weeks at her private practice. I am going back at 28 weeks. I LOVED watching my little boy, he looked like a proper little baby and I got 40 minutes of scanning time. I paid £69 so about $100 and it was the best money I've ever spent. The experience was priceless and I can't wait to see him again at 28 weeks with his developed features and more activity. His 3d pictures are amazing and so clear. I have an anterior placenta and there were no issues seeing him perfectly. They offer a great policy where if baby isn't in position they offer a free re scan a week later. Maybe ask your normal practice who they recommend? I couldn't be happier with the experience I've received. :)

Also from the medical side of things they checked the things that they could at 16 weeks, was nice to see 10 fingers and toes and that he didn't have any facial defects. They took measurements and I took these with my to my 20 weeks, they will also take measurements at my 28 weeks and check the heart etc again just to make sure nothing has changed since my 20 week scan. I have no need to worry about this pregnancy at all baby seems to be healthy but it's always nice to hear that again a few weeks later :)
  • We had our 3D Ultrasound done at our anatomy scan around 18/19 weeks... We got absolutely no good shots of our little one. He looks like he has a snout in all of the pictures! Our Dr reassured us that the 3D imaging distorts the baby's features, especially if they are movers (which he is!) and that his nose is perfectly shaped. But it was so weird!!!
  • I wouldn't do one. At my as at 19w 4d the tech switched to 3d for a second one the face and I could barely see her features. Also, in Oregon the boutique places are against the law for many reasons another poster listed. I don't trust anyone but my dr/office with matters of my baby.
