Sushi.. yay or nay?

Hey y'all, Dh and I are craving sushi for dinner. I wanted to get your opinions on whether this is ok or not. I normally only eat the crunch roll which has veggies, cream cheese and i think either shrimp or crab in it. I have NEVER eaten raw fish of any kind, but wanted to see if the cooked kind is ok. Maybe without the swee eel sauce since im not sure what its made of.. Thanks

  • I'm having sushi tonight. :) I do hear the raw can be ok, like @magnumJ said, if it's fresh and prepared well, but I personally stick to the non-raw because I'm a worrier! Very few things sound good to me recently but sushi is one of them, so I can't see giving it up!
  • My doctor said stay away from the raw, propably to be sure.
  • Cooked is totally fine!

  • I ate cooked sushi all through first pregnancy and I plan to do it again. No raw stuff, just to be on the cautious side.

  • I also read sweet eel sauce is fine too. I'm pretty sure in my bump book.
  • Cooked stuff is fine. With both my previous pregnancies I ate a bite of DH's raw stuff here and there too... Mama wanted sushi!

  • Since I live in CO, I don't really trust the freshness of the raw fish around here. But I have had the cooked kind. Some thing to keep in mind, I digested the sushi super quick so I ended up getting really sick the next morning because it was almost like I hadn't eaten at all. Next time I will have a dense, protein packed snack before bed after sushi.

My midwives told me (for my last pregnancy) if you ate there before and never got sick, you're probably not going to hurt anything while you're pregnant. Just stay away from the "predator" fish (tuna, swordfish, shark). If you never ate raw fish before I wouldn't worry at all ;)

Japanese women eat sushi. I will not deny myself my favorite food! (Unless of course I'm too nauseous.)
  • yum.... now I want sushi.  I never eat the raw stuff though.. only crab, shrimp tempura, and veggie rolls. I ate it all the time with my first two pregnancies.

I ate sushi when I was pregnant with my daughter. It was the cooked stuff. We always had the same server and we were regulars at this particular place. Our server was always this really sweet Japanese lady and she always laughed and said, women in America are always so worried and in Japan pregnant mommas eat sushi all the time. She had two kids. I know she wasn't a Dr or anything but that made me feel better and I never worried about it after that. I always find it interesting that different cultures and countries have different "rules" for pregnancy.

I was so paranoid with my first that I didn't even eat cooked sushi because I was afraid of cross contamination with the raw fish. However, I'm totally having some this time around dangit! :) I'm debating if I'll have raw sushi or not. We've been going to the same place for years and have never gotten sick. I did have some raw before I found out I was pregnant and was ok.

  • I didn't touch sushi with my first pregnancy but dove in face first last Friday for a ton of the raw stuff. I read and researched a ton before going. I felt good about my decision after that. It's the same place we always go to and I've never been sick before so I'm not worried. It was soooooooooooo good.
  • I'm only 6 weeks and have already been out for sushi with raw fish!  I have gone to this place almost every week for a year and have never been sick. I likely won't eat raw fish from a place I'm not familiar with but I know this place is fresh!

Rereading this thread, I just want to make it clear, when the doc says "don't eat sushi" they're actually only referring to the raw stuff. No one cares if you eat cooked sushi.

And I eat the raw stuff pregnant because we have fresh fish and plenty of places that handle the fish properly, so no food poisoning or worm concerns...

  • Tomorrow my DH and I are going to Boulder where they have some awesome sushi restaurants and I'm for sure having the raw fish. There's a highly reputable place I ate at all the time prior to pregnancy that makes these amazing hand rolls that are as big as a qdoba burrito. I'm so excited!!!

  • So re: cross contamination... I asked my doc specifically about this because I actually only like veggie rolls but was concerned that they're made with the same mat. Doc said not to worry, still just fine.

  • Eat the raw sushi if you're at a decent place. I had it and ceviche last pregnancy. If it's Bubba's Chinese Thai and Sushi then stay away from the raw stuff.

  • @bfavors - imitation crab is made out of cooked fish, so you should be good :)
