Swimming?

My family went to our local YMCA pool and had a blast. Bought my first maternity swimsuit and I finally felt pretty! Some lady came up to me and said I should not be swimming while pregnant because it was not safe for unborn babies?? I just said, well I have never heard of that and I have two other kids and just walked away. This is my first time being pregnant in the summer so I never really looked into it.

I have never heard of this! Did I miss something?

I've never heard of this either. I go bob around on the noodles at our pool for hours, and once the weather decides what is wants to do I plan on swimming laps in the morning on days I don't feel like running. As far as I've heard it's perfectly safe to swim with baby on board...

  • I think the lady is crazy. This is my 4th and I have never heard such a thing. I would go crazy this summer if I couldn't swim.
  • What's wrong with that woman? There's nothing wrong with swimming at all as long as it's a clean body of water and you use sunblock and stay hydrated.
  • That's crazy. It's great exercise. I just got back from Orlando on vacation and I swam in the resort pool with our girls literally 6-7 hrs at a time for a week straight and it was glorious. Enjoy your swim ;)

Swimming is perfectly fine, so says the NP I saw this morning. Ignore that advice. ie the advice of the crazy person at the pool today.

  • My grandma, who is 85, told me that they used to not take baths or swim because they thought the baby would drown.  Maybe she was of that era :) Obviously, we know better now.  You're good!

  • @thegingeravenger  She wasn't much older than I am, possibly late 30's early 40's? Our Y has a large, outside area for the summer that we like to go to. They keep things clean, so no worries there.

@mamavbs I thought it sounded really odd. I'm usually not that gullible. I'll blame it on the hormones ;)

I will continue to swim and ignore the crazies. Thanks ladies, I knew you could get me a straight answer :)

OMG, really?  Old people are awesome.
  • I'm pretty sure I'll be spending my summer in the lake at a local state park. A chlorinated pool poses absolutely zero risk!

  • No it actually says that swimming is the best kind of exercise for pregnant woman because it is gentle and soothing and there is no chance of you falling on to your stomach lol I don't know what that lady was taking about.
  • My doc says swimming is great when pregnant! Good excercise snd it keeps us cool :)

Oh my gawwwwd I can't stand people and their made-up-wacky-website-facebook-meme-old-wives-tail health advice. It's one thing to be an idiot, that's probably not completely your fault. But don't try to force your idiocy onto others, especially strangers.

I hope you gave her some sass back.
  • Only heard that with hot tubs, maybe she just can't read the sign right :).

    HOT TUB....POOL
  • Just took my toddler for a dip in our pool. That is one of the most uneducated comments I've heard in a while. I love when people comment about something they know nothing about.
  • I just got back from a swim at the Y - almost every doctor you ask will tell you that swimming is one of the best exercises (when else can you feel about 10% of your weight?!).

The lady is believing an old superstition. My husband heard it a few days ago - they used to think the baby could drown if you went swimming (never mind the fact that the kiddo is swimming in amniotic fluid and isn't actually breathing oxygen with its lungs yet). It is perfectly safe!
