Anyone have/had BV?

I'm waiting on. My ON office to open because something is definitely going on. I've never had a yeast infection, so it could just be that, but of course I googled and my symptoms seem more in line with BV. If you have had it or have it, what made your OB test for it? Thanks!

Re: Anyone have/had BV?

  • They found mine during a papsmear. But they just give you something along the lines of flagyll for like 5 days. I would definitely ask them for the insertable gel instead of the pills if you do have it. Because the pills are DISGUSTING! its nothing serious just a bacteria that can get inside of you.

  • I had it during my first trimester but couldn't treat it till second tri. I had to take oral antibiotics 2x for a week each to get rid of it. Personal experience in the past, the inserts never worked for me. The pills were always the better option. I never had any nasty taste or anything with them but I also took them with chocolate milk to mask the taste. I was tested because I thought it was a yeast infection
  • i got BV around the same time with both my pregnancies. first time i thought it was a yeast infection and asked for a culture. it came back as BV. the second time i knew it was BV based on the symptoms from the first time and asked for a culture. sure enough i was right. both times they gave me a low dose of Flagyl i had to take for 7 days.
  • 38 weeks and I've got a YI and BV right now. Lucky me... My doctor said the YI may have brought on the BV. On Saturday, I took the one dose pill for the YI, and I'm taking an antibiotic for the BV, 1 pill 2x a day for a week. Doc said it wasn't a serious matter and wouldn't hurt the baby. I should be cleared of both before birth.
  • Can I ask what your symptoms are?
  • Heavier discharge burning while peeing itching.. a lot of the same symptoms as a yeast infection. I asked for a culture also because I had bv with my ds1 also while pregnant around same time. Maybe my taste buds are just weird but it tasted like a metallic taste all day long.
  • Found mine doing a swab at the hospital. Doctor noticed a change in discharge that I hadn't noticed because it was already different due to being pregnant.
Was given pills. Took with food and had no issues.
  • Thanks for the responses! The midwife is having a swab tested and I guess I'll find out. She said it didn't seem like a yeast infection to her. I'm still very itchy, but she gave me some suggestions to deal with that, in the meantime. She said due to the coloring and amount of discharge, it could've been my MP. She checked me and I'm 2cm. I hope that's not the case. Now I just need to wait for a phone call.
  • Haven't had it but working in urgent care I've seen it quite often. Usually you get some of that fishy smelling vaginal odor they talk about and sometimes you can have a greenish discharge as well, along with some itching, redness, and discomfort.

With this BV, I've had common yeast infection symptoms: BAD itching and more discharge than the usual pregnancy discharge. Mine was kinda cloudy, but white. No odor though. That's why I thought it was just yeast. I'm taking Flagyl for the BV and I took one dosage of Diflucan for the YI. This is the first BV I've ever had.

You're lucky. My vagina is all out of whack so BV is a fairly regular thing for me which is why I was so surprised I didn't notice it this time. I guess I got lucky though and skipped out on most of the symptoms this time haha

Lol well I just thought it was a really bad yeast infection! No burning, but the itch was unbearable. Feeling much better now though.
  • I have been having trouble with both yeast infections and BV during pregnancy. It seems the minute I get it cleared up the symptoms are back. Right now i am just struggling with YI.

I had BV bad about a year before I got pregnant. It was so hard to get rid of and it smelled awful! I felt completely disgusting. But it finally cleared up. I wouldn't have known I had it during pregnancy but I was cultured for yeast and came back positive for both. The BV cleared up, but the yeast is being persistent. I hate it because when my symptoms are bad I don't want to have sex, and we are usually doing it daily!

Eat a lot of yogurt or take probiotics! I took my YI meds after the antibiotics because since they get rid of all bacteria, YI can come back after the BV is gone.
  • @shannonota I'm not a yogurt person, but I'll have to check into the probiotics! I am SICK of having these issues! Thanks!!
  • I have a long history of it. My only symptom ever is odor. I don't get the usual fishy odor, more like an odor of ammonia, or even kind of a rotten, garbage like smell. It's awful. It is common during pregnancy and they will prescribe you either the gel or an antibiotic. Both have around a 70% cure rate at 2 weeks after treatment, though I believe the orap antibiotic gets slightly better results. It is possible that it will come back or that the antibiotic will only work while you are taking it. That happens to me. After years of frustration, I have found that is is more effective to treat it with probiotics, as it is an imbalance of bacteria and although antibiotics kill the bad bacteria, they do not introduce the good bacteria that you need to keep the right balance. Best to take both, and continue with maintenance probiotics for awhile after it clears up. The best to take is femdophilis. During pregnancy, your doctor may say to only take them orally, although some may approve of vaginally insertion. Lastly, don't panic, even if it does not go away. The chances of it hurting the pregnancy are very small.
  • I've had BV once.  I thought it was a UTI -- just burning when I had to pee and the constant need to pee.  Turns out it was BV.

Ugh! I've had it. And it's THE WORST! After a surgery, doc prescribed hardcore antibiotics which killed a the "good bacteria" down there. Then came the BV. The odor is the absolute worst, and the burning. It's just awful. Thankfully the oral pills room care of it immediately... Good luck!
