Midwife

Is anyone using a CNM (certified nurse midwife) for delivery? Or has anyone used a midwife in the past? What are your experiences?

I have the option to choose midwife or OBGYN. Since I am low risk, I'm considering using a midwife.

I'm going the cnm route, assuming everything stays low risk. We asked arou d for lots of recommendations and interviewed before we got pregnant, so I feel like I already have a bit of a relationship withher, so that has been good. We are planning a home birth, so if you will be at a hospital I'm sure you will have very different questions. For me it has been great, when I have had questions/concerns I have gotten to speak directly to her, not to a nurse or receptionist, and she has spent lots of time each time we have met/spoken. I had done a lot of research ahead of time and have pretty clear ideas of what is important to me, and one of the things is to go less 'mdicallized' with fewer ultrasounds and medications, which I think midwives are generally good at respecting. Since I haven't delivered yet, I don't have anything about the delivery, but so far she's been great. When I did my interviews with other midwives and ob's I asked tons of questions and felt like I got a good feel for how they like to practice, and she was def the best fit for us, so make sure to shop around if you've got the option.

  • My practice has a small mix of midwives and doctors. If everything is healthy and uncomplicated the midwife will deliver but a doctor is on call if needed. By the time I deliver I will have met everyone in the practice.
  • Using a midwife! Everyone I have talked to have had amazing experiences with midwives. And the OB I was referred to had HORRIBLE reviews so I didn't even go to that appointment and made one with a midwife instead.
  • I'm using a midewife this time, plan on birthing at a birthing center.
  • I can't speak highly enough of my first birth experience with my midwife. Truly.
My husband was sceptical at first, but now he too is the biggest advocate.
The level of care, in my opinion, is unparalleled. It's different... Less "clinical" and much more intimate. BUT this is not to suggest that they somehow know less or are any less capable. In fact the opposite is true. I could go on for ages, but I know many people have experienced both an OBGYN and a midwife and they say the same thing. I've never felt safer and my experience, because of my midwives, was so incredible.
  • First pregnancy and using a midwife. I'm so excited. We have our first apt. On July 8th. My 12 week point.

  • I'm with a midwife group. Love love love it. I went with them with my son and it was a perfect experience

This is how I found my midwife. The doctor I was referred to had terrible reviews. Things like "he ruined my birth experience", "every time I think of my child's birth, I cry". So I started looking for other options and found the midwife group in my area. I had the most amazing experience. Even my husband spent weeks after DS's birth telling everyone that they should go the midwife route! I doubt you will be disappointed if you go with a midwife.
  • I am seeing a CPM (homebirth midwife) I absolutely love love love her. I don't know if I will be able to deliver with her or not because we are supposed to be moving from Tampa to Maine in October. Florida medicaid will pay for while Mainecare will not. Since the move and the deliver coming so close together I don't think that it will be in our budget to pay for the homebirth. ThisThis is the second time I will miss out on having a homebirth due to a move and since this is my last baby i am so disappointed. My others were all delivered with a CNM in the hospital. My last two were born with an incredible wife in MA who has her own practice so you are guaranteed to have her at your birth and she stays with you the entire time unless she ahs another mom in birth then she is alternating between the two. My first two were born in separate midwife/OB practices. I'm not going to say I disliked them because i pretty much got the birth experience i wanted, i guess it is mostly that there is always one you like best and that one never ends up being the one who catches baby. My first the midwife liked the best was with me for the first half and the one i liked least was with me for the birth. I was only 17 and after the delivery they gave me a cathatar, they said it would make peeing the first time easier. That shit hurt so bad. My second birth there was only three midwifes so it wasn't so bad. For me having a midwife is very important as I know there are things an OB and I will never agree on. I don't want an IV unless I in have Group B strep and then I want a HEP lock so I am free to move about. i don't want to be attached to the EFM and stuck in a bad. Walking around, moving swaying is the best way to move the baby down and reduces your labor time.I DO NOT want to be offered drugs. I want access to a shower or preferable a tub. I don't want my baby to receive eye drops or any vaccines. Those are some of the major things but I am sure there are more. I just think if you have plans for a natural birth you should see a midwife or your chances of getting it are very small.

Will have a midwife doing the delivery with doctors on call.... Just in case of any emergencies.
  • I'm stuck with an OB due to being high risk, but I don't have anything against midwives. Just a word of caution. You never know if things will go from low risk to high risk at the drop of a hat. Unless you're comfortable with a complete stranger delivering your baby, you may want to at least make an appt with the OB at your office. Even if you never need to use his/her services, at least you'll know who's coming in to care for you in the event of an emergency.
