Lifespan of pumped milk?

So I have heard a bunch of different "rules" and lifespans of pumped milk, what have you heard? If you have frozen milk how long is it good for after its thawed? How about fridge milk once it's taken out & freshly pumped milk?

The hospital said one thing, Medela says another, & what to expect says something else. Thank you :)

I know it'sso confusing! I first heard that refrigitated milk is only good for 24 hours and i actually threw 2 bottles out! Then i saw a poster at the hospital that says it's good for 5 days! Which honestly makes more sense to me, so my rule to myself is 2 days, freezer milk rules are all between 3-6 months so my rule is 4 lol as for thawd freezer milk, if the baby had any of it then i throw it out because bacteria from her mouth goes into the milk, if not and it defrosted in room temprature of fridge then i apply fridge milk rules from the time it's been thawd.

Room temprature milk i'm hesitant about so i keep milk in a cooler bag when i have to take it anywhere.

Not sure how much hep this has been but like you said everyone seems to have different rules so you do what feels right for you

I was told by doctors and nurses that breastmilk is good for 4 hours room temp. Thawed or freshly pumped. After baby has sucked on the bottle of breastmilk its good for 1 hour. Refrigerated breastmilk is good for 24 hours. I am not sure if that helps- thats just what I was told in the hospital. So those are the rules I follow. :)

And my guidelines from milkies says: room temp 4-6 Hours at 66-78 degrees. Cooler at 59 degrees 24 hours. Fridge at 39 degrees for up to 8 days. And up to 12 months in freezer 4 degrees or lower.

Ha, my hospital and lactation consultant said 666 rule. 6 hours fresh at room temp, 6 days in fridge, 6 months in freezer.

Re: Lifespan of pumped milk?

  • Thank you all so much for your help, I greatly appreciate it!
  • I go by the 555 rule also. The le leche league also has different guidelines. Im sure if baby drank milk that wasn't according to the guidelines that they would just poop it out or have an upset tummy...right?
  • I would think so. As long as it isn't super hot or been sitting out for a long time.
  • Hi ladies Does anyone know if you can take milk out of the refrigerator and leave it on the counter to become room temp? My warmer is broken for the third time, and I've been putting the refrigerated milk in a cup of warm water to warm it. Some times I forget and my son is screaming for milk while I am warming it. Just wondering if anyone knows if you can leave the milk on the counter for a while? I left a message for my lactation nurse, just curious what others do. Thank you :)
