Holy Heartburn!

Has anyone else had really bad heartburn? I've never had heartburn until now and boy does this sucks! My husband went out and bought me tums, I've already eaten 3 and it hasn't done the trick! It says on the bottle don't take more than 6 in 24 hours when pregnant. I've been sipping on milk and that helps a little bit but I just want to go to sleep! I am currently propped up in bed with the couch pillows and 4 regular pillows to try and help me so I can sleep but nothing seems to be helping! Has anyone found anything that works good for them?

  • Yes it's definitely not fun but I read that chewing gum helps and I've found it to be true! Good luck

  • Your treatment will depend on the severity and the cause. Try Zantac 150 twice a day. Tums honestly won't touch pregnancy-related heartburn. Zantac should help with overproduction of stomach acid. I'd also recommend avoiding or limiting dairy because it increases acid production and makes reflux worse.

If that doesn't work, you could be suffering from low stomach acid which also lists heartburn and GERD as symptoms. For this, some say drinking lemonade or an apple cider vinegar tonic helps. I've been overusing my antacids so if I feel like my food is just sitting in my stomach or backing up in my throat, I'll know that my acid is too low and I need to drink something acidic to help my stomach break down the food.

If OTC meds or remedies aren't working, you should talk to your doctor. I'll be asking mine about a prescription because it's gotten so bad.
  • Heartburn woke me up in the middle of the night last night!!! Probably because I had 3 pieces of pizza an hour before bed.  OOPS!!  Took some maalox this morning.  I've never had it too bad, but first trimester was the worst!!  Maalox is what works best for me, but I've discovered you can only find maalox/mylanta in store brands.

Oh yes. Oh yes. The feels. Lol!
  • Doc put me in Pepcid 20mg 2x/day. That plus the occasional tuns has helped finally. Tums on its own did nothing.
  • I had to call my OB because I was so uncomfortable! He recommended Zantac 75 as needed. I take one each morning and sometimes one after dinner, it has been a life saver.

Prilosec OTC every day has worked best for me.
  • I'm in the same boat!  It almost doesn't matter what I eat or drink....I just get it!  I joke with DH that pregnant women don't eat a bunch of ice cream for craving it but more because it feels good going down!  I had tried some pepcid pills for the first time other night and it didn't do anything.  I've been living off of tums since pregnancy started.  Sounds like I need to try Zantac!

  • Zantac 150 every 12 hours is what I've been doing for weeks.
  • Thanks ladies! It finally went away when I woke up this morning but I will keep these in mind! I've never had heartburn before and man it wasn't fun! Good luck to all of you mamas!
  • Hi - I too have terrible heartburn. For the beginning of my pregnancy I was taking Zantac which my doctor said is safe but it only provided moderate relief. Lately it's been so bad that I've researched other remedies which some of the other bumpies have mentioned above, chewing gum can help, obviously limiting fatty/fried foods and overall foods you notice trigger the heart burn. But what I've found works the best for me is drinking apple cider vinegar if you don't mind the taste. It almost always completely eliminates my heartburn. It's like magic!!
  • What works for me is not overeating. I eat three small meals, and three large snacks. Also, not chugging water. Instead, drinking throughout the day. And no eating close to bedtime.
  • Take a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar mix in an oz of water before dinner each night.....miracle!! It's not the best tasting but it works, my heartburn would wake me up at night & Tums wasn't doing much! It's natural so better then taking over the counter meds on a daily basis :)
  • I swear by Healthy Mama brand heartburn chewables! You can take up to 15/day although I never need more than 2 at a time, 2-3 times a day. Also, when you take meds try to limit liquid intake, since that stimulates digestive enzymes which trigger HB.
  • I have GERD. I have to take a prescription, Protonix, once a day. My ob also had to have me add Pepcid twice a day. It seems to help keep it away if I remember to take them (which today I may have forgotten and now I have heartburn). Orange juice is my big trigger. Peppermint gum can help.
  • Elevate on pillows, water, and tums. It was real bad last time and semi bad currently. Try sleeping on a couch or staying away from foods that trigger it. I.e bacon in a BLT for me
