16 week elective u/s worth it?

For those of you who chose to pay for an elective gender determination u/s, did you feel it was worth it or would you have just waited until your 20 week scan if you had it to do over again? DH and I went in for our NT scan at 12w5d our u/s tech told us that she was 90% sure our baby is a girl!  Obviously she told us not to go painting the nursery pink until we go in for our 20 week scan, which isn't scheduled until the last week in July.  Now I'm 14w3d and I just need to know!  I want to start buying girly things and working on the nursery!  What are your thoughts on paying for an elective scan at 16 weeks instead or waiting?  Worth it or save the money for baby items?

  • Although I have not personally made this decision, I would imagine that it would highly depend upon your financial situation and whether or not it will be a burden on your budget.

You seem extremely eager to find out, which is natural, however I don't think that anybody can determine whether or not it would be worth it for you without the details of your personal life which I'm sure you do not wish to share.

Hopefully you'll get some great feedback from the other women on the board though! Good luck mama :-)

I say try to be patient and just wait, I haven't seen my baby since 8w and don't get to until 19.5w, it's tough but it'll be worth it when we see he/she!
  • This is my first time around but I would probably wait! I wasn't even offered that so (luckily?) I don't have that decision to make. But if you wait until the AS, you'll know 100% that the gender is correct, and if you're anything like me, the weeks FLY by.

I'd say wait. I have a blood test done but I had my 15 week ultrasound this week and the doc looked for gender parts but said it was still early and may take a couple weeks to see parts clearly. Just my two cents! :)
  • My doctor gives a courtesy 16 week us to determine sex then the anatomy us at 20 weeks. So like others said if you can afford to pay for it and really want to know go for it.
  • I haven't had it yet, but it's scheduled for next week. I figure, why not! It's very affordable at my OBs office, but if it's outrageously priced, I would wait.
  • It all depends. I had one done and i pay $39 to determine baby sex.. We are having a boy. We have 2 girls already.Im 15 weeks and clearly it showed boy parts. Baby was showing it off during the whole 15 mins on ultrasound we even got a dvd of the whole 15 min section with lullaby. So it was worth it for us.

My dr recommended an elective place to visit at 16 weeks and it's only $55, so we are doing it and it's totally worth it to us. I'd wanted to do a blood test to tell us earlier orginally, but that would have been $200, which was not worth it to us for that much.
  • I'm doing the 16 weeks anatomy scan! Mine is in 4 days and I'm so excited!!! I waited for the 20 weeks with my first and it was torture.
  • Unless something else is worrying you apart from the sex of the baby, I say be patient and wait 4 weeks. It's good practice. Plus, what if you pay for the elective and baby isn't cooperating and you can't see anything? Just wait.

You get much better pictures when the baby is a little older. With my first baby I went at 17 weeks, and then with my daughter at 20 weeks. There was such a big difference in what you could see and how they were acting. I'll be waiting until I'm 19.5 weeks this time around.

Thanks for your input, ladies! Still haven't decided if we'll go ahead with the elective u/s or not, but you all gave me some good things to think about.

  • I am 15 weeks and going to have an elective one done for my twins. I will be 15w5d and they said if we can't get a clear image we can come back for no extra charge. We are going to a separate strictly ultrasound office not OB. Then I have my AS July 17th at 19 weeks. I am super excited to see if we can find out early.

  • Ok. With my first I didn't do any elective ultrasounds I saw heartbeat at 8 weeks. 12 week NT scan and 20 week AS. With my second I had a lot of bleeding on and off. I went in at 13 weeks to make sure everything was ok since I was bleeding and they told me she was a girl but that I didn't hear it from them. Then I paid for a 16 week u/s where they confirmed girl and at the 19 week u/s they confirmed girl again. So this time I had a 12 week and then have been DYING to find out what we're having...I work in a hospital so I had a resident do an u/s and they said boy. 3 days later I paid for an u/s and they said girl. I was 14 weeks. Now I'm scared that it was obviously too early and they were just guessing... So I won't be buying pink or blue until my 20week u/s and wish I hadn't even looked cause I'm right back where I started. Do I listen to a dr or do I listen to A tech at a place I paid that does it all the time?!?!

@kakers321 - Wow, that would make me crazy!  I wouldn't know who to listen to.  I'd be waiting for my 20 week u/s to buy anything if I were you too.  We decided to go ahead and pay for the private u/s at 16 weeks.  I'm hoping we get the same answer again or I'll be in the same boat as you!  Haha

  • The tech at my NT scan said girl and we're going for an elective ultrasound on Friday, and I'll be 16w4d. Ours is included in the 3D/4D session we'll be having later on ($149). I'll be having another US in about 2 weeks with my doctor so I feel like it'll be our confirmation so we know for 'sure'.
