Carters clothes true to size?

The size chart for carters says that newborn clothes fit up to 8lbs. Anyone know how accurate this is? I picked out a going home outfit from there but am trying to figure out if I should buy nb or 3mos. Big babies run on DHs side (he was 9#11oz, his dad just over 10 and his grandpa was 12). According to measurements (which I know are hit and miss and not overly accurate) this baby will probably be over 8lbs. If I have a 10lb baby will NB fit? If I end up with a 7lb baby will 3mos be way too huge?

It depends on your baby's shape and how much they'll lose in that first day or 2. Babies often go down a few ounces a couple of days after birth. In my experience, Carter's clothing is long and thin. My 8lb 9oz son was in Carters newborn clothing for at least a month after he was born (most 0-3mos were huge on him) but I've known other babes around the same size that never wore newborn. Basically, it's hit or miss. I'd personally bring a newborn and 0-3 month with to the hospital in case one doesn't fit.

  • Carters clothing fit the best for my daughter, true to size. She's long in the torso so other clothes like Disney and Old Navy were too short and too wide when Carters fit perfectly, of the same size. I think Gymboree fits similar to Carters. Little Me was a horrible fit, too skinny and impractically made so I avoid them.

Once your kid is born you can be a better judge of "when" a size will fit. For us, Carters was right on the nose predicting when she would griw out of something (she was 95th percentile in height----tall!). At 3 months, she grew out of 3M Carters clothes. At 6M we boxed up the 6M clothes. When we got to 18M I didn't put the last of those shirts and pants away until about 21-22 months old. But at 23 months she is well into 2T and growing out of 24M.

  • Carter's ran a bit big for DS. He was (and still is) a very slim long baby.

  • It's different for every baby. Carters and old navy runs perfect for us. In my opinion, yes, a 7lb baby would swim in 0-3 month (LO was amost 7 and wore newborn for at least a month). Oh, and she was predicted to be over 8lbs too ;)

  • I'm not even bothering with newborn this time. DD was out of newborn within a month.
  • Carters individual clothes are true to size.  But if you buy layette sets or combo sets, I have found they are narrower and DD grew out of them sooner compared to other Carters clothes.  I do think Carters is more true to size than other brands.

  • I feel like for infants there is no such thing as "true to size." They are all so different. My DD was in newborn at 8 lbs for about 5 weeks. But she has been in 18 months since she was 9 months old, she is now 15 months. You kind of just have to expect they won't be in some sizes for very long. You just save those outfits for the next one ;)
  • I feel it runs true to size for NB-6 months but then my kids were too skinny for their pants/shorts/skirts. DS wears 12 month shorts from Carter's now at 2yrs old.

  • Carters have always run perfectly for my daughter. As in, on her 4th birthday, we transitioned to 4T. Carters are my favorite. That said, every child is different and I'm still taking two sizes to the hospital.

Carters > Gap/old navy > Rugged Butts > Chico > Gerber. I packed both newborn and 0-3 month with my first who was 10lbs7oz. Hah!! I think we managed to use some newborn for the first week. Carters is my go to...
  • My son was 7lbs 8oz, 21.5" long when he was born and swam in NB charters clothes. It is what I brought to the hospital for him. They were all huge. This time around I bought the CP NB clothes because they are longer and slimmer, more for a NB shape than craters is, IMHO. Newborns are oddly shaped and I am not sure if anything fits them correctly!

  • Not sure if this helps, but my first was 8.4lbs and 20 inches and wore Carter's NB for the first 2-3 months.

As for other brands Baby Gap and Gymboree runs BIG!
  • My 6lb, 12oz lo swims in the newborn size Carters stuff.  It will fit her for some time to come.
