Anyone at risk due to age?

i am 34, 9 weeks pregnant with my first child. At my nurses appointment I was told I'm at risk since I'll be 35 at delivery. They have me going for screening to measure the baby's neck. Anyone else going through this and feeling scared?

Re: Anyone at risk due to age?

  • I'm 11w2d and will be 40 in 4 weeks. I'm worried about all these age related statistics but am trying to be optimistic!

Is this your first? Thank you for writing. I am trying to stay calm and positive but the hormones and this is all new to me, has made it a little hard today. I go for the screening July 7th. I think it's all the waiting.
  • I am 42 and 9w0d, pregnant with my first. I am in high risk category due to age and also my weight. Try to ''enjoy'' the extra care and attention if you possibly can :)

  • I wouldn't worry to much. Almost everyone does that test even if they are 15. It's called the NT test or Nuchal Translucency test :)

I'm 35 too, 11 wks Monday and that when I have my first ob appt. I went through ivf and they discovered I have hyperthyroidism so I was told I might be high risk too. Good luck with everything, I'm sure your doc is doing routine tests for us "old" moms :):):)@ecp21
  • I am 38 considered advanced maternal age so I will have a blood test to check for abnormalities before 13 weeks I am not worried just taking it one day at a time :)
  • I am 43, have hypothyroidism, and Multiple Sclerosis. Pregnant with 2nd child after 16 years. I am high risk. Had blood test for abnormalities so far all is perfect!
  • I'll be 38 when I deliver my first. While I am worried about being high risk, my OB is not worried at all. She said b/c I'm healthy going in (even tho I'm a little overweight), I'm not at any more risk just b/c of my age. So I'm trying not to worry!!!

Hey ladies - I am 37 and 12 weeks today. I am totally with you on the worrying about Downs, Edwards etc and would really recommend the Harmony/Nifty test if you can afford it. It's super pricey BUT I just got my results back today and it's the best money I ever spent.
Really try not to worry but I know it's hard. If you're not able to go for the blood test then DONT go online as you'll scare yourselves! Get the NT done and decide from there.
Good luck and pls let me know if you want any info about the Nifty test xx
  • I'll be 39 when I deliver. I was really concerned about my age when I first met with my doctor. He was great. He rolled his eyes and shrugged his shoulders and said, "It's just a number and you can't change it". He said even given our increased risks the stats are still very low and just that....stats. He wants me to remember that the vast majority of pregnancies end in perfect babies.....regardless of mom's age. I'm glad to take his advice.

Wow! Thank you all so much. It does make me feel better. I'll keep you all posted.
  • I am 9 weeks and I'm high risk due to having twins and being 35 when they are due. I also had gastric bypass 5 years ago which concerned ob because of not absorbing enough vitamins.
  • I'm 9w2d today and am 37. This is our first. Haven't seen my OB yet, only the infertility doc. However prior to getting pregnant when I saw my OB, she said forget about the statistics. Women have healthy babies much further on in life now, including her last kids (twins) in her 40's. She said that advanced maternal age gets younger and younger all the time. Relax, enjoy, and celebrate.

    I am 35 11W5D and will be 35 when I deliver.
They (dr./nurses) have freaked me out as well with this maternal age/ senior citizen having a baby BS.
This will be my 2nd child. I go today to see the Dr. And I am waiting for her to tell me when she wants to go to in for the screening/testing. I am sure it will be this week.
It is SO overwhelming, confusing and scary. You are not alone. I will pray for comfort for you as well.
PS ladies we are not old. This is our time. The perfect time for us to have our bundles of Joy.
  • I'm 36 and a FTM. My midwife said I'm not automatically considered high risk because of my age. The NT scan is routine in the UK for everyone regardless of age. They use a combination of your age, the back of the neck measurement and blood work results to work out the risk and my results came back with a much lower risk than normal which was fantastic.

My mother had me at 40 and that was 31 years ago. I think I came out alright ;)
  • I'll be 37 at delivery.  I do worry about it, but it's just the way the statistics are, so I try to stay positive.  I want to have the NIPT testing done.  I hope that I am allowed to do so but I'm still not certain.

To hopefully brighten things I have a friend who is 42 and just delivered a perfectly healthy baby last week :-)  My best friend is also over 35 and she had 2 healthy babies in the past 2 years (second one also last week) :-)

  • ::raises hand:: Old fart at 42 here. I was AMA with my first, and now I'm so old that my eggs had started to get dusty. It is what it is. We are older moms, and there are pros and cons to it. I'm trying not to worry, myself, and having better success at it some days than others. I'll def be doing some sort of genetic testing. I'm 9 weeks today, and have an OB appt next week where I imagine I will find out more about it. Worrying is a waste of energy, and we all need the extra energy to grow these babies!

I am 41 so in terms of age i fit in to high risk however i have no medical history of any problems and i have been accepted to deliver at a country hospital that does not a cept high risk pregnancies so i dont really consider myself high risk! I am 10 weeks 4 days !
  • I'm 29 and would just like to reassure you that lots of babies with older mums turn out fine... My mum was 2 months away from her 44th birthday when she had me... In 1986!!! She was (still is actually) part of a group of older mums who meet up for coffee/play dates etc and they all had babies in the 80s who have all grown up healthy :) my sister had a baby last year when she was 41 and he's now a happy, energetic one year old. Your baby may come early (like myself and my nephew) but technology is a hell of a lot better than it used to be!!! Just keep positive - there's no point worrying unless you get told something is wrong. I hope all of you lovely ladies have happy and healthy bubbas :)
  • If you are older than 34 or 35 your insurance should cover the harmony, stepwise and/or maternity 21 tests. While these tests are more accurate than the NT scan and the afp test they are not 100% even if your Dr tells you otherwise, please research it. I had the stepwise done and am awaiti mg the results. An added bonus of those tests is the early gender reveal.
