Hmm...that's true! I never thought about that. And we will most likely be released before it comes in. I was told to bring mine so the LC can show me how to use it if I needed. I'm taking mine for that reason.
I wouldn't because I already have so much crap I'm taking but this is my second time and I'm using the same pump. I could see the lactation consultant having tips for you though.
Check first! Most hospitals have them there for you to use and theirs are better than yours. When I had my baby two weeks ago the nurses brought one in for me and gave me everything I needed as well as helped to show me what to do both to nurse and pump.
I didn't bring mine with my first because I didn't think I'd need it, but my son was super sleepy and wouldn't really eat, we had some early breastfeeding struggles. They had me pump at the hospital (using one of the pumps they have available to rent) so we could syringe feed him the colostrum. This time I think I'll bring mine just in case so I can use it instead of the hospital's since I'm more familiar with it, hopefully it won't be needed! I would recommend bringing yours if you have any questions or want help from a lactation consultant.
With DD she couldn't suck right away without gagging due to cord being around her neck and because she swallowed meconiun. The pump was nice so I could give her some breast milk through a syringe in little amounts. That way she was getting her feelings and I was able to provide the breast milk. Plus my milk came in right away. Check with your hospital thoUgh because ours had the hospital grade pumps we could use so I didn't even take my own.
I talked to my doctor yesterday. She said its a good idea to bring it, so the lactation nurses can give me tips and show me how to use it and make sure it fits properly, so I don't have nipple trauma.
It helps the milk come in and the lactation consultant can help you use it properly and I think it's just better to bring one if you can, then you don't have to wait for one to be available for you (we share at this hospital)
