FTM---- advice for using reusable diapers

I really want to use reusable diapers only for my LO and am at a loss of how to go about starting off. I found 2 brands that I really want to try (applecheeks and bum genious) but kept reading from online stores to buy a few different brands/styles to find what works best for baby. Is that necessary or is it just their way of getting you to spend more money? I also found 1 website that charges $20 for a 30 day supply of about 8-12 different styles. Does that sound like a good idea for a first time user instead? I would really like feedback from moms who have used them and which have worked the best for you. Also is it appropriate to have on a baby registry?

Re: FTM---- advice for using reusable diapers

  • There are a couple of posts about cloth diapers.  A search for one of those discussions may help you answer your questions.  A lot of times people won't have the time to repeat advice multiple times or they miss a post.

  • I have a few different types, just because I see a good deal and think I want try them. $20 for 30 day supply sounds like it wouldn't be a bad deal because you might find certain diapers that you thought you would like, dont work out well for your baby. I do have some bum genius (the pocket kind), and so far really like them an will be collecting more for this babe. Be careful what you use with cloth diapers, no desitin or other creams that provide a waterproof layer, coconut oil has worked the best for us in preventing rashes.

This will be very helpful for you, as well as the cloth diapering board. Where is the $20 dollar deal? That sounds like a good one.
  • I didn't like bum genius but we Loooove applecheeks. I totally recommend trying them out. There are some buy/sell/trade pages on Facebook where you can probably get some used for a decent price.

The page "fluff love and CD science" is a fantastic resource as well.

I think someone said the cloth diaper board was abandoned a year or more ago and no one is using it at the moment.

We use Charlie banana (they're adjustable so we've used them for the last year and a half) we have 14 of them. We love them and our son loves them way more than disposables. When I was starting out I watched YouTube videos of moms talking about their stashes-it helped me a lot as dorkie as it is!
  • The $20 30 day thing was on momsmilk boutique online store. They also sell lightly used for a little bit cheaper but not much. My SO doesn't like the idea of buying them used or the rental services offered by some stores (I don't think he understands how well they hold up just yet). I'm thinking of starting with that sample offer and bum genius size for newborns for now and see if I like any of those offered in that deal. Thank you for the info about creams and other places to look for more information. It gets so overwhelming with all the different options out there.
  • I did a crappy job cloth diapering with my son, so I can give you some great advice on what NOT to do:

Do NOT start with disposables and then switch to cloth when the baby is a bit bigger. My son was born really small so this seemed like a great idea. Then when I switched him he hated the cloth and woke up screaming every time he peed just a little bit (which is all the time with newborns). I don't think this would have been an issue if he had been in them from the start.

Do NOT invest in all one kind before you know what will work well for baby. I bought the Flips hybrid diapers and they do not fit my son well at all, but now I have a bunch and I'm not really sure what to do.

I think if I had it all to do over again (which I may with this baby), I would do a diaper service. More choices, less laundry/spraying out poop, and it's pretty affordable in my area.

Hope that helps! Maybe we can both learn from my mistakes :)

Thank you that helps a lot. The thought of starting off in disposables first did cross my mind but I didn't want to have to do it if I could avoid it. I haventt looked into any diaper services/costs in my area since my fiancé doesn't like the idea of renting them or buying used. Which I know would save us a little money to start out with. I personally don't mind the extra laundry since I already planned on doing extra to begin with and I know my mil wouldn't mind helping out if I was too tired for it. Charlie bananas, bum genius, and applecheeks are on my list so far to try but I want to get at least 1 more brand to try first.

Were there any YouTube videos in particular you found helpful or will a simple reusable diaper search work for you? That doesn't sound dorkie to me at all just informative. And I just realized I was posting from both accounts. I forgot my original log in info and made another one and appearantly today I remembered it. -_- sorry about that.

Did you start off with more than 14 pairs?

No, we actually started out with 12. We use disposable also. Usually if we start out the day with cloth we use them until they are all dirty and then switch to disposable while they are in the wash. Probably not your tipical CL family but it works well for us.

I think a general search will lead you to some helpful videos, I wish I had links but it's been almost two years.

We did both of these things and it worked out fine for us. We used disposables for the first two weeks and then switched to cloth with no problems. We also built a stash of all one brand (bum genius elemental all in ones) and haven't had any problems.
