Hospital Pediatrician

Our pediatrician does not go to the hospital when the baby is born. However, of the one's we have interviewed that will go to the hospital to check our baby- we don't care for them. Are the hospital pediatricians just as good? Who will be checking your baby? Our pediatrician wants to see the baby as soon as we are discharged or day after. Thank you in advance from this FTM.

Re: Hospital Pediatrician

  • Our pediatrician practice has four doctors, all of whom I know and love; they rotate hospital shifts to check on the newborns. When discharged they have an appt for the baby to be seen the next day (this is how it was with my first two babies)

  • I don't even know the name of the one who saw DS in the hospital (obviously one did)....to me, this is NBD. We took him to ours when he was discharged.
  • We used the hospital ped because really they just check the baby over to make sure it can be discharged and you can see your real ped the very next day. That's where you can ask detailed questions and they will go over some basics with you.
  • Hospital on-call doc is fine until you see your pedi week one. Don't let that be a reason to change your mind!

  • Our pedi visits in the hospital so that's who saw DS and will see DD.

Hospital ped saw our son then we went to our regular ped. Our practice doesn't make hospital rounds but assured me that if anything was wrong they would be contacted and then would come to the hospital. All they do is check vitals so your baby can be released, I wouldn't make it a deciding factor in my selection.

  • We're having to go with the on call ped at the hospital bc our ped isn't "associated" with them since they went under new ownership. Even though their office building is in the same parking lot as the hospital!
  • Neither of the ped groups in our area so hospital rounds. The hospital has pediatric hospitalists and then the hospital will call and make an appointment for you at your chosen pediatrician before you leave the hospital. They like to see you within 2-3 days.

  • What PP said about hospital pediatricians is right. I met all 3 because my boys were in special care and they took amazing care of them so it was unnecessary for their primary care pediatrician to see them. If the practice does it anyway, that's great, but I wouldn't go with a doc I disliked purely because they do hospital rounds.

  • The hospital pedis at our hospital are actually the ones at the pediatric urgent care that we also use. The office is too far away for us to consider actually using them for a normal pedi (and we really like ours anyway), but I was perfectly happy with them for the few days we were in the hospital and haven't thought twice about it this time.
  • I wouldn't give it a second thought, what they do is so basic and if God forbid the baby needed immediate care it would still be a hospital pedi.  Our regular office does not go to our hospital, so the first time around I just asked my MWs who they recommended and went with her.  Then we see our regular pedi at 4 days old.
  • We see our pedi within 2 days but the hospital doc was great too. Super nice guy, very understanding of us being first time parents. I'll never forget him seeing our "deer I headlights" look and telling us all we needed to do was take our baby home and feed her and love her. I will never forget how nice that was to hear :)

  • Hospital pediatrician saw both of my kids and they were super nice and great. I think I had to take them into my chosen pediatrician within 2-3 days.
