Baby items provided in hospital

This may sound silly but I'm the first of my friends to get married and have kids. I hear people talk about the "going home outfit" but do they provide clothes for the baby the other days? Do they even wear clothes or just a diaper and blanket? I don't know what to pack in the diaper bag . I plan on breast feeding if all goes well. Looking for a little advice on what to expect, thank you

Re: Baby items provided in hospital

  • No, they don't need clothes. They do stay in a diaper blanket and cloth hat. Even if you do bring a going home outfit, people still put them in a blanket especially if its windy or cold.

  • What hospital keeps a baby naked? The last two babies I've had the hospital provided a gown for the baby to wear during the stay, but you'll want something to bring baby home in. Especially if you're due in winter!
  • As @jholmberg85 said, the hospital usually has the baby in a onesie with a beanie and diaper.  I recommend bringing socks, a receiving blanket, outfit to go home in and (depending where you leave) an other layering necessary to keep the LO warm (e.g. car seat cover).  The hospital will supply diapers (they actually sent us home with a small pack - unexpected bonus!) and any medical dressing should you be expecting a boy and plan to have him circumcised.
  • You should take a class through your hospital. That's what I did with my first and it helped me feel prepared. They gave a tour and talked through as much as they could. This is one of the questions you could ask them as all hospitals are a little different.
  • I never thought of taking a class there, thank you, also someone just told me about a picture outfit if the hospital does baby pictures. Never thought of that either. I feel prepared for the going home with a car seat cover and warm dress and blankets. I just wasn't sure what to bring for the hospital stay. I'll try to contact the hospital tomorrow and see about classes too. Thanks ladies!
  • I'll just chime with my experience. I only brought a going home outfit, socks, and a blanket to cover the car seat (it was Feb in New England.) Everything was provided for baby during our stay at the hospital.

  • My hospital provided shirts, socks, hat, blankets, paci, diapers, wipes, and formula (if you choose to use it). I would bring an outfit or two, baby nail file and maybe a couple of your own swaddle blankets (the hospital ones aren't very soft) and a heavier blanket for the ride home if it's cold where you live. When we were leaving the nurse told use to take everything and they even gave us a going home diaper bag.
  • I think it's different for every hospital. Mine provided cloth diapers and receiving blankets but that's it. We had to dress her with clothes we brought.

  • I think the best idea is to ask your hospital what they provide.. Every hospital is different.. It never hurts to ask!! Also ask about the clothes situation.. I'm taking some outfits just incase..
  • Mine like most provide a plain white shirt, hat, diapers, wipes, formula, pacifiers, also a nose bugger sucker thing (my brain cant think this early on the name of it)
The Basic needs for the days your there.
  • @JLW0504 They're NOT for taking home?!?!?! BAHAHAHA Then I guess I stole from the hospital. They gave us snap front 6mo size shirts (the only size they carry), diapers, samples of baby wash, blankets, and a hat. The "wipes" they used were paper towels that they would wet with water. I brought socks, a going home outfit, and a pram. The hospital also gave me witch hazel pads, sanitary napkins, a peri bottle, a numbing spray for my lady parts, and something that looked like pads but that you would fold in half and it would get really cold and you would put in your panties to help with your lady part swelling.

  • We are signed up for a hospital tour in September and a breastfeeding class at the hospital in October. I'm sure you will find that your hospital offers similar classes.
  • Our hospital has those terrible little tie front shirts. No onesies or pants. So I like to bring my own clothes.
  • We were provided diapers, wipes, shirts (which they told us to take with us), two blankets to take home, a comb, a snot sucker, 4 pacifiers, and baby soap to take home. They also provided items for me to take home for myself such as pads, a peri bottle, ointment, etc. ask your hospital.

  • The hospital provided baby with a hat, blanket, a plain white long sleeve shirt, and a pack of diapers (Pampers). I brought 2 going home outfits (one in newborn and one in 0-3) and our own hat to use for pictures. On our hospital tour we were told we didn't need any clothes for him. I left him in the plain white shirt while we were there and I remember he had peed on it while changing him so I asked for another, the nurse said "Oh you don't have your own clothes?" I remember feeling horrible because I didn't bring him clothes and made H go home and get some onesies. So even if the hospital says you don't need them throw a couple of onesies in the bag just in case.

I was given all the necessities for the lady bits too (even though I had a c-section) but I was told the minute we got into the room that we were not to take the blankets and shirts. But, like I said, who hasn't taken one or two..... or all of them? ;)

  • In the UK we are told to bring everything that baby will need so this has been an interesting read!
I just wanted to second the advice about a baby nail file. My son's nails were really long when he was born and I had to send DH out to buy baby nail scissors. It hadn't even crossed my mind that I might need them immediately.
  • Baby stayed in a swaddle sleep sack the whole time she was in the NICU just FYI.
  • My hospital provided swaddling blankets and hats. It didn't occur to me that I would have needed clothes from home. This time, I plan to bring both a newborn and 0-3 going home outfit. My first was swimming in her 0-3.
  • I think it depends on your hospital.  They all seem to give the hat and onesie or snap t-shirt, and even blankets.  When I had my son 6 years ago, they gave me a robe, and a diaper bag to take home.  When I had my daughter a year ago, they just gave the snap shirt, diapers and a few blankets.  Maybe ask if/when you take the tour of your maternity ward.
