I need a hobby

I'm a FTM and teacher on summer vacation. I'm not ready to tell people for another couple of weeks so I spend my time worrying myself to death instead of going out for afternoon cocktails with my teacher friends. So... long story short... I need some ideas to keep my mind off of being worried all the time. I need a hobby. Anyone have some good ones??

Re: I need a hobby

  • Hi! I am a teacher on summer break, as well, and also driving myself and my boyfriend absolutely crazy! I am in graduate school right now so that keeps me busy, but I get very restless and find myself not being able to concentrate! I really love to free-hand paint and find that it eases my anxiety tremendously!

I love knitting! Lots of craft stores or yarn stores offer classes or you can teach yourself via youtube!

  • I taught myself to crochet early this year. It helped after my losses. And now I can make things for my babies! I used YouTube and started with simple stitches!

Two years, two losses and three IUIs...

    We are having TRIPLETS!

I learned to crochet and also do yoga. I love both and they keep me busy.
  • I love antiquing and repurposing old items. I'm also always trying to improve my house... Going to start remodeling my kitchen as soon as I'm feeling better. I also love the ideas of knitting/crocheting... Sounds fun.

Knitting/crocheting is a great way to keep your mind busy while still relaxing. Also, if you miss going out with your friends, consider talking to the waitress and ordering virgin drinks without your friends knowing. Staying home all the time will drive you and your SO crazy.
  • Sewing! Then you can alter/make your own maternity clothes, baby clothes, nursery linens, etc.

I cross stitch. I'm going to start making a baby themed one so it will be done by the time this LO is born. Then I can add birthday, weight and length onto it. I did was for DD as well

I made a few fabric wreaths for my classroom door last year and am planning on making seasonal ones to match my bulletin boards this year.  Google it. Super easy and a great time-waster.  :)
  • My bf just bought me a knitting kit so I can learn to make things for baby (: maybe try that, I'm just a beginner so I'll be teaching myself lol.

@vidatorr check out Knitting tips by Judy on you tube! Also, Ravelry is a great site to get free patterns!

  • I'm a SAHM for my step-girls that we only have half of the time so I completely understand your 'time to worry' predicament. I garden medicinal herbs & flowers and use them to make oils, tinctures, salves, elixirs, you name it for my family & friends and about any ailment out there. So I grow, study up and get my Witch Doctor on! If you have outdoor space where you live, gardening could be a calming release. And the Vitamin D you soak up is great for you & baby. If you prefer to stay indoors, some of the PPs have nailed it with crocheting & sewing b/c you can begin nesting for the baby and it's fairly simple once you get the hang of it. Let us know once you end up finding this new venture :)

  • Scrap booking? I feel like it's not really "in" anymore, but I enjoy it.
Once you hit ur second trimester you'll have tons of energy so you can nest and work on the baby room and occupy your time with painting walls and putting together furniture and stuff.
  • I make all natural soy candles and soaps, i paint, and i do yoga. All of these are stress free hobbies and yoga has SO many health benefits, especially while pregnant! Make sure you are doing prenatal yoga if you do decide to try it out because some of the regular poses are not recommended during pregnancy. I have a candle business but there are plenty of starter kits you can find online or at craft stores.
  • Netflix! Hahahah
  • Today was the last day of school (I'm a teacher too), and the first thing I did was buy a new book on my Kindle. Reading is my first love (as I tell DH all the time) followed closely by photography and hiking. If you want to know of some good reads, let me know!
  • Google DIY baby projects for each week you are pregnant. Saw some good ideas on mothersniche blog
  • @cyanope, have you read the outlander series? I started a few weeks ago and am really enjoying them.
  • I enjoy going to greenhouses. I like giving people plants for gifts and putting together terrariums. Should be safe as long as you wear gloves. Outside gardening is fun, too. You just have to be extra careful with wearing gloves and washing your hands. A PP said that they like to repurpose things, that's also a hobby I enjoy. Other than that, I like heading to museums and reading. When I was bumming in the first few weeks with morning sickness a close friend told me that I should do prenatal yoga. I plan to sign up very soon. If shopping was free, I would totally count that as a hobby I love. hahaha

I hope you find something you really like to pass the time :)

  • Ah! So many good ideas!! I, too, love books so I just downloaded several. I finished one today. @cyanope I would love some suggestions! Then I saw this amazing vegan brownie recipe on Twitter so I decided to go on a baking adventure! I love to bake. Hubby suggested I hit the driving range by myself every once in a while (we're big golfers). I'm not too "crafty" but I have spent a formidable amount of time googling classroom DIY projects! I'll definitely jump on the prenatal yoga train once the second tri kicks in. I went to a prenatal class early in a previous pregnancy and just felt weird. I know it's all in my head but I will be waiting.

Thanks for all the awesome ideas everyone! I will be coming back to this post every time I'm feeling bored out of my gourd.

I taught myself to crochet using a YouTube video www.youtube .com/watch?v=AIbIirzNiyg. (it puts the link in a video on the forum, so delete the spaces before the .com) This is the blanket that I am working on right now. It's 6 feet wide but I'm only about halfway finished. When I find out the gender, I'll work on a baby blanket or two (:
  • @Lizzie5831 @bkc92 I'm a sewer too! BurdaStyle has some great patterns though not that many maternity ones. I will probably make some stuff for the baby when I'm less tired, also.

  • All great ideas--- I know for me, a solitary thing like knitting would still make me anxious. I do best when engaging with others. Are there any places you could volunteer in your area? Whether it's doing mailings, making fundraising calls, designing marketing - I think you could do this in addition to many of the items above!
  • I love to read and usually have at least three books on my nightstand at all times. I also like to draw; mainly with pencil and very detailed stuff...everything from people and animals to trees and old barns.
  • Along the lines of scrapbooking... one of the best gifts I got at my baby shower for DD was a scrapbook from a coworker. She had gone through and decorated each page chronologically from my due date with paper and themes like Christmas and bath time and stuff. It's great because I have so much less time now, there's no way I would be able to do something as nice on my own, but it's been sper easy to just add in my favorite couple pictures to each page as she gets older. And voila! Instant first year scrapbook! :-)
  • I like reading, doing puzzles, and crafting. There are so many DIY projects I want to try :)
